OG中出现过这种代词指代不一的情况，不止一处，但是GMAT仍为这种ambiguity是可以容许的,相对于其他的几个选项这个选项已经最合适了。关于这个知识点，RON专门讲过，建议你看看他的讲义，论坛有PPT下载

我的理解是，此处的it指代跟前面的Its肯定不是同一个。GMAT出现过蛮多，一句中同样代词指代不同的情况的，尽管Manhatton中说这样不允许。所以，实际情况下该从句意理解。因为，后一个It从位置上对应，从句主语对主句主语，优先指代的是，主句的：owning and living in afreestanding house on its own land。还原整句为：owning and living in afreestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of youngadults, as (owning and living in afreestanding house on its own land) is ( a goal) of earlier generations.

我记得老师说过假如代词that/it那些居中的作用不同的话是可以重复出现的，这里it是形式主语不是代词，就可以不同。我记得PREP还是GWD中有些题是题干里面就用了多处代词，比如说that situation..., twice as that of ...。一个句子里面起的作用不同是可以指代的。
