In the reading passage, the author hold a view that people nowadays are reading far less literature than they used to, and this trend has negative effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself. On the contrary, the professor contradicts this by presenting three reasons.
Firstly, the professor points out that the reading passage fails to take other factors into consideration, stating that not only the literature can provide the intellectual stimulation. The professor gives example that the historical and politic stories, though they are not literature, are also of high quality and justified created, which could stimulate our imaginations just as literature does. Therefore, the author is clearly too absolute to draw the conclusion without ruling out other possibilities.
Secondly, the author contends that diverting time previouly spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general. While the professor opposes this opinion by arguing that literature is not the only form contributing to the culture in general, there are many other forms of culture besides literature. For example, seeing a good movie do not lower the cultural standard. Hence, the author obviously has drawn the conclusion on the basis of a false assumption.
Thirdly, the author may be right about the declining trend of literature, but a crucial fact is being left out of consideration. The professor points out that it is the literal authors' fault ntead of the readers's, because they write some books very difficult to understand and they should lead literature easier in order to attract the audience. |
