As表in the same way ; 是一种方式状语，它用来修饰动词，I'll behave toward them as I would like to be treated。
as essential …… as……是比较状语，后一个as修饰前边的as essential.
明白了这一点，你回头看看A中作为比较状语是否合适

您的意思是AS用于方式状语，修饰动词而不能修饰BE动词，所以错么？
我本来就觉得这句话原意完全没有比较的意思，D中加入了比较，改变了原意所以错了。

参照OG13 85题：

(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations

方式状语从句用来修饰动词，表达以怎么样的方式……。A中的用法是非常矛盾的。你后来举的例子是正确的方式状语的用法，但是它和A不同。我认为这是因为； A be essential to B其实已经表明了A,B这种关系，当再用as ……说明A,B关系时会造成了思维上的混乱。这时候需要的是比较状语，
