There are many components of your application. Pay attention to all of them and show strong attention to detailon all!

1: The GMAT exam. For your top schools, yourstandardized test scores are going to be one of, if not the most important, components of your application. You should research schools to see what their average scores ofaccepted applicants are, and what their minimum target is. Plan well inadvance how you are going to achieve the score you want. There are many ways tostudy for the GMAT including classes given both in person and online; guidebooks; smart phone applications; and tutors. It will most likely be somecombination of the above that will lead to success for you. TIME is one of themost important things you will need to dedicate to this cause. I have heardreports that test takers who spend at least 100 hours studying have a goodchance of scoring over 600.

So, following that, if you spend 2 hoursa day studying, 5 days a week, you will need 10 weeks to get to this 100 hourmark. You should also figure into your timeline plan to take the test more thanonce – you may not need to but you should build that in as a just in case. Youcannot take the test more than once a month, so you’ll need at least 30 daysbetween tests. Applicants often ask me if we will look poorly on an applicantwho has a low score followed by a higher score, or vice versa. That issomething you’ll need to research for each of the schools you are interestedin.
申请前就查清楚学校的平均GMAT录取分数,了解自己和学校的要求吻合程度。同时腾出足够的时间来准备考试也想到重要。

2: Your GPA and transcript. Just as with the GMAT, many schools are going to have minimums that they have to or want to adhere to.Obviously, the better your GPA in your undergraduate or previous master’s, thestronger your application will be. However just because you have a lower thandesired GPA, doesn’t mean that you can’t stand out as a desired candidate.Admissions officers will try to forgive the errs of what a candidate might havedone as an 18 year old, but there usually needs to be something to make up forit from the candidate.

Admissions officers will also look closely at a candidate’s transcript to see if there isimprovement over the course of their undergraduate program, or to see if maybeit was just one bad semester. This is something that can be addressed in apersonal statement or essay. Remember, it is the goal of the admissions committee toadmit students who they believe can handle the coursework and rigor. The lastthing they want to do is set someone up for failure. If your GPA was below 3.0, you can potentiallymake up for it in several ways:

a.Better than average GMAT scores for that school
b. Strong resume and work experience
c. Very strong letters of recommendation
d. Compelling personal statement/essay
e. Additional classes taken that you receive A’s in – if possible, theseshould be quantitative in nature; you may even consider a Master’s program inanother area before your MBA.
f.Interview (if granted) to sell your particular case and show your currentmaturity level

3 Your Resume & WorkExperience. The amount ofwork experience and the relevance of it as it relates to your short & longterm goals, will put you in a better position. Play close attention todetail on your resume, just as you would with a job search effort. Many schoolshave a minimum number of years of work experience as a requirement for theirapplicants, but not all do (Please review Carey Admission Requirement herehttp://carey.jhu.edu/admissions/requirements.html). Your resumecould be that one thing that will set up apart from other candidates. Maybe you have globalexperience, or good supervisory experience, or project management.

And remember, your experience can befrom a non-business background and still be extremely valuable. Schoolsrecognize the need for various careers to have an MBA. Many doctors, researchscientists, physical therapists, engineers, etc either advance their careers intheir current industries, switch gears to a new position, or turn to entrepreneurialventures with the education of an MBA. MBA programs really value the potentialof that. Your experience makes a difference to the “flavor” of the classes youwill be in. What students contribute to the team projects and class discussionsis a huge part of the learning experience for everyone.
如果你有强大的工作背景那固然是好! 但是如果没有太多的工作背景,申请者也可以从国际经验, 项目管理等方面着手来展现自己的成熟度。
