Universitiesshould require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’sfield of study. Should universities require every student totake a variety of courses outside the student’s filed of study, as thestatement contends? The benevolent see benevolence and the wise see wisdom, Ifundamentally agree with the recommendation since the graduates are expected topossess a broader perspective to keep path with the ever-growing socialdevelopment. Thanks to the fact that variety disciplinesare interweaved, the knowledge derived from other courses is profitable to thecompulsory course that the student majors in. Take Da Vinci for example, notsurprisingly that he was a preeminent artist, whose representative work is MonaLisa. Meanwhile, he made remarkable contributions to science. His conversancyin anatomy provided much of the impulsion of achievements in painting works;this reveals that different disciplines are interrelated to each other withrespect to some aspects. Another example is that, student who majors ineconomic should lay a foundation of mathematic, economic problems usually relatedto calculation that involves in math. Thus, it is beneficial to students toacquire and consolidate specialized knowledge with the ornament of wide scopeof compactible knowledge. Additionally, only bathing in the majorcourses cannot satisfy the requirements of the increasing complicity of thesociety. With wide perspectives and horizons, students can comprehend andaddress the complicated problems more efficient and more reasonable. Takingcourses outside the student’s field of study equips students with greateropportunities with respect to job-hunting; students are not of necessity toparticipate in jobs associated with their specialties, the knowledge absorbedfrom the outside field of study also give chances to students to obtain betterjobs in future. Therefore, attending in various courses has edges instrengthening of individual’s competitive ability in the developing society. Overemphasizing the significance of takingthe courses outside the own field study, however, may result in some undesiredresults. One is that, students may neglect the investigations in the majorcourses. Moreover, the onerous academic burden exerted to students may not onlylead students generating the boredom of these variety of courses of outsidefield, but also having disadvantages in focusing on the main classes. Hence, universities should put emphasize on the importance of taking the major coursesof each students, while encourage students to attend in the courses thatoutside their fields. To sum up, the statement does have some defectsif do not take reasonable execution, however, taking some of courses unrelatedto the student’s own field is really advantageous to enlarge the scope ofknowledge and enhance the understanding of the major courses, and yield morechance in employments. Therefore, from my point of view, the merits overweightthe flaws accounting for this subject.
