1. Why do programs use the GMAT as an admission requirementand how important is it? Tue Jun 25, 2013 1:08 pm The GMAT has been used as an admission requirement for decades. It’s mostly used by AACSB accredited business schoolsthough many non-AACSB schools also use it. Though there are students whoperform very poorly on the GMAT (below 450) and do very, very well in graduatebusiness school, research shows that those who score higher on the GMAT do in fact perform better inbusiness school.
We did our own study and found thatstudents below a 450 usually do poorly in graduate school while those who scoreabove 450 do substantially better. We found that though those who scored abovea 650 did slightly better than those below 650, it wasn’t significant abovethose who scored between a 550 and 650.
Given the fact that’s it’s been proven, on average, to predict who will performbetter, it is a critical part of the admission process. 总结：因为GMAT 的分数在一定程度上可以预测这位申请人能否在硕士阶段很好的完成学业，所以GMAT 在录取时候的重要性也就不言而喻了。
2: What about the applicant’sundergraduate GPA?
The GPA is a very strong indicator of success. In some studies we’ve done, it is astronger indicator than the GMAT. Those who had a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPAdid much better than those who were below 3.25. We give a student’sundergraduate GPA strong consideration.
The GPA and GMAT together seem to be the best indicator of success.
So if we see someone with a 3.8GPA and a600 GMAT, there is a very strong likelihood that they’ll be a fantasticstudent. Someone with a 2.5 GPA and a 700 GMAT demonstrates raw intellect butwe’d be concerned about lack of motivation and want to know why the
Someone with a 3.9 GPA and a 400 GMATindicates to us that the person is, perhaps, not a good test taker, but workshard to achieve good grades.
Most schools use a formula to calculate an index score. The equation for us and manyschools is ((GPAx200)+GMAT) score. Our minimum index score is 1,000. Someschool’s it’s 1,200. Tue Jun 25, 2013 1:17 pm 3. I have a question regarding undergrad GPA. My GPA is good(3.7), but I have got a C+ in Statistics which is a very important indicator tobusiness schools.
If I score well in the quant section of the GMAT, will the schoolsoverlook the grade? Do I need to address why I got a C+ in Statistics inoptional essays? Or should I not draw attention to it? Will this be considereda normal blip in my undergrad record?
In our program (I can't speak for all programs), we look at the total GMAT scorefirst. If the applicant has a few "suspect" grades in certain classesthat we feel are important (like statistics and other quant classes), we'lllook at the applicant's quant gmat
If it's ok, the index score is in ourrange, good letters of recommendation, etc, we'd admit the student. If thestudent did poorly on the quant but met our index score, we would admit onprobation.
Either way, the student must hit the minimum index score.
