理解成非限定性定语从句没错，去掉不影响主句意思。
理解成原因状语从句好像也没错，作主句动作的修饰语。但是从句子结构上看，我觉得非限定性定语从句更合适。

个人拙见Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood, are now drawing solid conclusions about how the human brain grows and how babies acquire language.这个句子中having结构的确是做状语，之前听某某老师讲过，分词做状语结构的来源是状语从句，但是考虑到简洁性所以讲状语从句简化成一个结构（讲谓语转换为非谓语），本题中如果调换一下语序 Having amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood,neuroscientists are now drawing solid conclusions about how the human brain grows and how babies acquire language.就可以看出having结构是后面那一坨的一个原因。
也可以将其还原成状语从句Since neuroscientists  amassed a wealth of knowledge over the past twenty years about the brain and its development from birth to adulthood,they are now drawing solid conclusions about how the human brain grows and how babies acquire language.更容易理解

the only difference between having done and doing is the former EMPHASIZES that one action happened JUST BEFORE another action.

感觉这一点说的很对。。无论是定语状语，能修饰的就是对的，黑猫白猫都可hh，没必要纠结到底是啥成分。知道这样做是对的+原理是啥 就行了
