问题：在acting as sentinels 和sounding之间为什么用and, 而不用逗号连接，我认为在平行对称结构中，只有最后一项前用and 连接，其他项之间只能用逗号？

6．最后 the chemical irritant是什么作用，是同位语还是其他，修饰前面的什么内容？

9．……one they believe to be of……
问题：答案解释中说one（that） they believe to be 句中不需要that，为什么？

3,只有最后一项前用AND, 但这并不排除使用AND 连接两个[小]并列成分构成第二个[大]并列项.
6.是METABOLIZE 和RENDER的宾语
9, ETS 说是SUFFICIENT. 我认为你应该作为一个习惯用法进行记忆即可, 这里没有原因. JUST REMEMBER IT!!!!

疑惑 the chemical irritant 是否应该是metabolize的宾语,但是or render harmless 我总觉得render是和metabolize 并列,为何后面还有harmless??,
我自己的理解说这样的: ,render是和metabolize并列, 后面都是接的harmless
(如果or前面没有逗号我可以看出来,此处是不是加不加逗号都可以呢---疑惑),
如果
此处the chemical irritant 不是metabolize的宾语
而是指代dioxin,既然是指代dioxin,
那么可否把dioxin提前呢,构成 In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin, the chemical irritant, induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's attempt to metabolize, or render harmless.

The noun attempt could follow organism's; also, it would parallel the noun enzymes, and parallelism is needed here because the sentence uses the linking verb are to equate enzymes and attempt. In C and D, however, attempt to try is redundant. Choice E, which says attempt to metabolize, is best. The phrase the chemical irritant is also the most concise and precise conclusion for the sentence because it clearly refers to the dioxin mentioned earlier.

难道render 是V 而harmless是adj

For my opinion, "the chemical irritant" should be the object of "render", and  for emphasis the author places it at the end of sentence.In addition, "render sth. harmless" is an idiom and ,as you said,"harmless" is an adjective.So the normal sequence of the sentence should be:
