Diversify, diversify. Maybe adcom's intention to do so can explain this phenomena. Each school set its goal for diversity such as 40% female, 35% international, or 5% hispanic something like that. No matter how good or how not good the applicants in its pool are, the number of accepted within a certain pool is almost fixed before one apply.
Female applicants actually compete within their own pool, which nothing to do with male applicants. However, there are actually two ways to help one to be more competitive in such a obvious unfair world. The easier one is to implement a gender change operation. The less easier one is to focus on his/her essay and interview.
