Yes, and that's a very important part. Also, when they interview you later, they will ask you to write down part of your essay during interview. So, please do understand what you write in your essay.
I hear Yale is very stricted with GMAT score, my G is 690, does that mean I had better quit this school? by the way my GPA and working background is quite good.
From my talk with some faculty, they are definately more interested in an applicant's background and interest in the school. They use GMAT to predict whether you can perform well academically at SOM.
I would encourage you to apply if you have an interest in the school. Maybe you can highlight your academic strength (GPA, scholarship, TOEFL, etc.) in your essays or in the interview.
