Does modern technology help students learn more information and learn it more quickly?

We must concede that technology does help people get information easier, since technology bring us google, facebook and youtube, on which we can get not only conservative reading material but also watching and listening material. Generally speaking, modern technology broadens the diversity of information we can get. However, as for the point that modern technology not only helps students learn more information but also help them learn it more quickly, we should be cautious about this sweeping opinion. In other word, whether more information can help students learn it more quickly overall needs further observation. Personally speaking, I think modern technology is inevitable to study, or more precisely speaking, modern technology actually makes students learn information more slowly.

On the first place, students nowadays spend much more time on entertaining. And modern technology plays an important role in this trend since it brings students video game, computer, psp, ipad and intelligent mobile-phone. Although students may learn something through playing these high-tech devices, negative impacts seem outweigh the positive impacts. Researchers have found that children who are obsessed with ipad will lose interests and curiosities toward the knowledge and even the whole world. In common sense, curiosity is one of the vital factors which contribute to learning efficiency. For instance, I have low efficiency every time when I am learning something that I am not interested in.

On the second place, modern technology brings us many other things that can distract us while we are learning. As the representative of the modern technology, computer is benefiting us on one side but disturbing us on the other side. For example, when sometimes I need information, I will go to computer for help. However, in most of times I will find myself end up with playing games or scanning news on the website, forgetting my task. And such situations happened several times, so I have to remind myself the goal while I am searching for information on the Internet.

Finally, proponents of modern technology fail to consider the value of the information that we gathered using modern technology. Information can be wrong or even deliberately made false to help somebody accomplish their evil goal. For example, in 2009, H1N1 killed a lot of people in China. Some businessmen spread the rumor that vinegar could kill H1N1, inducing people to purchase vinegar, raising the price of vinegar, and finally making profits in this process. And this bad influence should be attributed to Internet, a main form of the modern technology, to some extents. We can easily post any information on the Internet, and this kind of information occupies an ever-increasing percentage in all information. The ability of students to tell right information from wrong one is not well founded, and even adults can be misleaded by wrong information. Moreover, since there are reference books, newspapers and magazines available, students can turn to these sources of information instead of relying heavily on Internet.

To sum up, we should appreciate the contribution of the modern technology for it stream-lined our work and manufacture, make our lives easier by bringing us washing-machine and other devices, stimulate global economy and provide richer source of food to human. However, in respect of learning process, it actually do harm to the efficiency of learning overall now that more information doesn’t necessarily improve the efficiency of learning.

Marvelous as it looks at first sight, modern technology does not help students learn information at a greater speed and with higher efficiency in most cases; or it could work towards the opposite direction which led students to lose their initiative to learn and explore.

First of all, one property of modern technology is latently harmful to any learning mind – it distracts. One thing we feel about when we are searching for information online is that the internet, as an outstanding example of modern technology and even regarded as the innovator of education, provides us with not only relevant results to make use of, but also external links to click. More than once I turned on my computer to check school library for resources, but ended up watching Youtube videos. In this case, computer as a representative of modern technology plays a negative role in learning information. We do acquire more information with the convenient tool, yet most of them are irrelevant and in the end procrastinating would lower our learning.

Also, students would easily become disoriented in the huge sea of information. Although modern technology could equip us with easy access to information, the huge amount of resources would actually leave us discombobulated. Therefore, it is only we possess information more quickly rather than we learn it more quickly. An illustrating example is my experience with a HK digital library which stores almost all the books I desire. At first I enjoyed downloading them from the database, however, one month later I ended up with hundreds of books stored in my hardware yet none of them finished or ever clicked.

Furthermore, modern technology gives students an illusion that information and real knowledge is easy to learn – just by clicking mouse or watching videos. But in fact this forms only the first step towards useful information and effective learning, as learning of any kind requires full concentration and interactive thinking, which are almost absent in the pocess of popular e-learning experience.
To summarize, modern technology does not help students learn more information and learn it more quickly, though it does make access to information and resources much more easily. The popular e-learning still lacks the concentration, depth, and interaction that are the hallmark of traditional ways of educating and learning.
