This set of information talks about Chevalier de Seingalt and his memoir. The passage suggests that there are many distorted and made up stories in Chevalier`s memoir. Therefore, the real life of Chevalier is, in fact, not as exciting and glamorous as he discribed in his memoir. However, in the lecture, the professor holds a completely different view that these stories are actually real and well supported by evidences.
First of all, the passage points out that Chevalier claims that his life in Switzerland is not that wealthy because evidence shows that he borrowed a lot of money from Swiss merchant. The professor rejects this idea by denying the direct connection between borrowing and poverty. She believes that Chevalier often needs to wait a certain amount of time for his asset to convert to cash, and only during that period, he needs to borrow from the merchant.
Second, the passage doubt the accuracy of the conversations between Chevalier and a famous writer Voltaire by arguing that nobody can remember the exact contents of dialogues many years earlier. Therefore, the records in the memoir must be fake. The lecture, however, suggest that this argument is false because evidences show that Chevalier used to write notes about conversations everytime they occur and when he write the memoir, he is constantly reviewing such notes and journals.
Third, the passage states that his prisonbreak story is simply a made up because he has a lots of powerful friends in Venice and these friends can easily help him get out of the prison by offering a bribe. In contrast, the professor believes that this statement is groundless because some prisons who had even more powerful friend did not get out of the prison. An old document contains key evidences also suggests that right after Chevalier escaped, the ceiling of his cell had to be repaired. Therefore, according to the professor, the prisonbreak story is very likely to be true.
