Whether it is possible and fair to judge a person by the first impression is not a difficult question to answer. While some people believe that they can get a generally correct profile of a person just by the first impression, I insist that it is more cautious and thus more reasonable to spend longer time and collect more information in order to get a rather complete and profound understanding about a person.

To begin with, one of the reasons that I choose my position is that the appearance of a person does not always reflect the true personality or achievements of a person loyally. Tons of evidences have shown that many people are remembered not because their physical appearances but because of the contributions they made to our society. But it is not deniable that we are tended to be more attracted to a pretty face that we sometimes ignore the fact that whether a pretty face really enables its owner to be more humane, more intelligent, or more creative. In this case, first impression is sometimes deceptive.

Next, apart from the above illustration, first impression sometimes leads us to another extreme. It has been long accepted that beauty is only skin deep. So when we judge a person only based on our first impression, we will probably mistake some people with pretty face for superficial and stupid. I remember about a film named Legally Blond, in which the heroin, Elle, is a blonde. She is popular because of her beauty and dumped by her boyfriend also because of her beauty. Being considered brainless because of her hair color, however, Elle strives to be more successful than her former boyfriend and wins her Mr. Right by her beauty and wisdom. The film concludes that Elle has the hair of gold and a heart to match. It teaches us that to make a quick judgment is dangerous, because some of our common senses will really screen us from seeing the truth under the skin.

Finally, I suggest that if we want to know about a person, the best way is to spend a period of time to observe. Most of the personalities will emerge from some detailed actions. For instance, the best way for a leader to know about his employees is to assign a job to the employee under observation and to see how and how well the employee will do the job. If the leader assumes that one employee will do better than another according to the first impression, he will more often than not be turned down by the result.

To sum up, due to the reasons mentioned above, it is not convincing to say that one can tell the personality or merits of another just according to the first impression. It is not unusual that the discoveries after a certain course of time will prove that the hasty judgment is often misleading. Therefore, my point of view that we should not judge a person by the first impression has been substantiated.

To begin with, one of the reasons that I choose my position is that the appearance of a person does not always reflect the true personality or achievements of a person loyally. Tons of evidences have shown that many people are remembered not because of their physical appearances but because of the contributions they made to our society. To sum up, due to the reasons mentioned above, it is not convincing to say that one can tell the personality or merits of another just according to the first impression. It is not unusual (double negative) that the discoveries after a certain course of time will prove that the hasty judgment is often misleading. Therefore, my point of view that we should not judge a person by the first impression has been substantiated.

the whole essay is well-organized, and language is clear, but there are too many long sentences, which seems awkward to me.

remmember, post the topic;otherwise, readers cannot judge the essay even though it is well written.

Thanks. Your comment is certainly very helpful. I will make some necessary modifications and post again. By the way, are we not encouraged to use double negtive form in our writing?

"double negative" is considered  a grammar mistake.

Really? Then the ETS is imposing double standards for itself and the testtakers. That's unfair, but it is the rule that we have to follow. Thank you.

it is not ETS's grammar, but the requirement of the formal writing.
