PhD opportunity available at Missouri S&T. The project will focus "Control of Additive Manufacturing Processes".
Project details are listed below:
Drs. Bristow and Landers at Missouri S&T have a project funded by the National Science Foundation on the control of Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. This research seeks to create and analyze a Repetitive Process Control methodology for AM processes. It is challenging to regulate AM processes since their dynamics evolve in both time and layer. While well- behaved in time, these processes can exhibit poor performance, even instability, from one layer to another. The idea behind the RPC methodology is to continuously gather data during and after the process, and intelligently adjust process parameters between each layer. The student with create design tools for robust and high performance repetitive process control and experimentally validate these tools on a Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) process. This novel process is used to rapidly fabricate serviceable parts, repair high-cost parts, and produce functional gradient material metal parts. The student will work with another student that has been modeling the LMD process for the past two years and a research group in Poland with state-of-the-art experimental facilities.
