Issue29 24:33 The best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones.
Isthe best way to educate is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones,as the speaker contends? I don’t agree. Although it is an efficacious way toteach, however, it is not the best way, ignoring so many compelling evidencesto the contrary. Uponfirst glance the statement seems compelling for two reasons. First, it isundoubtedly that praising positive actions will cultivate a positive atmospherewhich is psychologically beneficial to students’ personality development. Thestudent who gets praised will serves as an exemplary model for others to followand mimic the positive behaviors. Secondly, the absence of criticism will remitsignificantly the stress in the teaching environment and therefore contributesto a better interaction between teachers and students. It is hard to imagine astudent who is afraid of going to school because the criticism from theteachers will likely to benefit from such teaching method. Butthe speaker’s ground is absolute to some extent by asserting that this methodis the “best” way while ignoring so many evidences to the contrary. First, thestudents who get praised may very likely become complacent, which is misleadingand may cause conflictions among students. For example, other envious studentsmay be provoked by certain complacency and hence isolate the students who getpraised, which scenario, if happens, will be greatly disadvantageous forstudents to build a well-balanced character. What’s more, ignoring negativeactions might have serious drawback, making students who misbehave don’t awareof their mistakes and therefore continue doing so, rendering misbehaviorcontinues in a negative circle that cannot be remedied easily. Finally, only praise without criticizing cannot tell the students to differentiatebetween what is correct and what is wrong and unflavored-they only know what ispreferred. Only when educators combine this two approach together the studentscan learn to identify the social value system. Moreover, criticism isubiquitous in reality. The absence of criticism in education will make thestudents unable to deal with criticizing when they are out of the educationenvironment and have a hard time adopting to this change and hence put them ina less advantageous position in the job market and everyday lives. Forinstance, if a parent don’t criticize their children, the children will felt asif in prison when they went to school; if a teacher never criticize herstudents, they will have a hard time in the company when they get employed; ifan employer never criticize his employees, they will end up be fired and haveanother hard time working in another company where the boss there is extremelyrigorous. Insum, despite the possible advantages in adopting the speaker’s claim, it iscursory to assert that this is the very best method we can apply now. In thefinal analysis, the drawbacks of this method are so sever to a point renderingall its advantages obsolete. In my opinion, only when educators strike abalance between criticism and praise can the students benefit the most. |
