第一题里面，我只知道ets比较prefer rather than to instend of.至于要不要加上介词，我也说不好，还请nn指教。

第二题因为前面的主语是rock samples，所以后面的谓语应该用plural, and therefor we can exclude choice A,B, and C. Choice D lacks a verb after and.

So, the choice is E.

个人陋见：
instead of 包含了一层含义：其后面被取代的内容，过去实际上被用过，举例：I will eat apple instead of orange. 我吃A不吃O了。说明，至少以前吃过orange； 而I will eat apple rather than orange. 我吃A不吃O。没有上述意思。

date to be 1000 years ago，不对；
只有：date to 1000 years ago； date at 1000 years ago

date 的用法以前争论过，不过，我没有找到贴子，有没有同学能找到。。。。

做代替用时，instead of是介词，rather than是连词，所以instead of by必错。

第二题我觉得dated at应该是固定搭配，也可以用词典和google去搜，得不到dated to be XX years old.
