This statement talks about the choice of fields of study for collegestudents, and the speaker prefers the point that students are supposed tochoose the fields that relative jobs are easier to get. Surely, many people aremore apt to attend a college for better jobs, but we cannot say that all thestudents should consider too much about jobs when choosing majors. On the onehand, students are expected to contribute to the society in the future, so thatthe availability of jobs might indicate a little bit about what the societyneeds the most. However, for a particular student, he/she may not like thesefields, then choosing the fields of study along the wind will ruin the futureof the student. Furthermore, the jobs much available now are likely to be notavailable in the future.
Admittedly, jobs with rich salaries are always the most needed the jobs inthe society. Therefore, if students just graduated from colleges go and takethese jobs, the society will get a relief and the nation will be equipped withthe necessities of blossom. For instance, surgeons always earn a huge bunch ofmoney because there always are people feeling all over the world. Doctors, especially surgeons, are needed by the world in both the short run and the longrun. As a consequence, excellent medical students are always welcomed andpeople will be better off if we have more doctors. In this sense, the degree ofpopularity of some jobs does indicate the future of the fields of study.
Nevertheless, though many fields are always welcomed by the society andstudents in those fields are more tended to get a nice salary, not all thestudents are interested in those fields. As we all know, each person is uniquein the world, so it's impossible for all students to like medical issues. Somepeople may pass out when they see blood, and some people are scared to seepeople's viscera out of the body. So even if the job as a surgeon is alwaysavailable and welcome be the society, there are only a part of people canchoose medicine as their field of study. Moreover, if all the people areflooded to medicine, medicine will become less and less popular; in contrast, students from other fields will be given high salaries. Hence, equilibrium willbe made and a proper distribution of students in each field will be made in thelong run.
The speaker's point of view is also based on the assumption thatavailability of jobs can be tell and predicted by people. But it's not true forall fields. Medicine might be an exception that is always popular, but otherfields is always changing all the time. For example, economics and businessmajors were welcome a lot recent years. But the heat of it is decreasingbecause more and more economics related students find it hard to find awell-paid job. Some of them even regret to have chosen this major at thebeginning. Conversely, some majors were not expected to be promising turned aroundat last, which makes students of those majors become so-called free riders. Animproper prediction will ruin the students' future.
Choosing shat field to study is always a headache for students before onin college. Although they have to consider the availability of jobs relative tothis field, they should also consider their interests and whether the jobs willremain needed after their graduation. Only by considering all the thingscomprehensively and following their own hearts can the students make a goodchoice and never regret after that. |
