3WE @FT500 FMCG sales,  G730/T108

Looking back at my b-school process, if there’s one thing that I would wanted to do better, it would be to have a better idea of what I want to do out of b-school. This is a difficult question to answer, and it’s a question many students can not honestly answer. However, if you do have that understanding, it would make your b-school experience easier.

The areas you want to do after b-school, marketing, consulting, or entrepreneurship are very different in terms of recruiting and school strength. The fact that you want to go return to China should be an important consideration as well.
Here’s my general understanding of the schools you have listed (from a US employment perspective):

1)Wharton – has a reputation as a finance heavy school that is cut throat. However, I would say that Wharton is balance in its functional strength versus other “finance” schools. And I have met some very helpful Wharton grads.

2)
Kellogg – built its reputation as the premier marketing school. It is known for team based problem solving and culture. It is starting to lean very heavily towards consulting.

3)
Stanford – the best school for entrepreneurship, especially tech. It’s location in the Silicon Valley, and relationship with the VC community will provide you with an incredible learning experience. It is also the HARDEST school to get into (~7% acceptance rate).

4)
Berkeley – very good school for entrepreneurship as well, similar strength as Stanford. In the US, I feel that Haas needs more diversity. An overwhelming numbers of the graduates go into tech in California. This along with the small class size, makes networking a bit difficult. It is also the 2nd HARDEST school to get into (~12% acceptance rate).

5)
Darden – a good general management school. I don’t think it would make sense for your career options (unless it has strong connections in Asia). It is not particular strong in the areas you are interested in, compared with the other schools on you list.

6)
Fuqua – similar to Kellogg in many aspects, 2nd best school for marketing, strong team based culture, and starting to lean heavily towards consulting. The best school for healthcare, but it doesn’t matter for your goals. The drawback is that Duke doesn’t have the same name recognition as some of the other schools on the list in China, but Duke has a very strong brand in the US. This may change with the new Kunshan campus, but that may not be useful for you at graduation.

7)
Ross – a general management school that is beginning to lean towards consulting. I believe, it has a stronger network in Asia than UVa (Darden). Other than that, I think it does not stand out among your list of schools.

8)
UCLA – UCLA and Yale are a tier below the other schools on your list in the US, but I think it has stronger brand recognition in China. In the US, UCLA is a bit regional (strong in the Southern California region), on par with UT-Austin, UNC, etc.

9)
Yale – very strong global brand. Its MBA program is still developing. It is known for its strength in non-profit, but is emerging as a finance school, thanks to its close proximity to NYC and its undergrad alumni support. Many SOM graduates goes into the smaller boutique investment banks.

I would advise you to reach out to some of the students at those schools. Find contacts on LinkedIn or through student clubs in areas you are interested in (focus on Chinese students, who will have a better idea of the recruiting situation). I’m sure students will be more than willing to talk to you.
