Thank you again. I have exactly the same thoughts with you. If I didn't get in the six universities I'm applying for now, I'd rather wait till next year. However, I have a big concern that if I didn't get in any of these schools, what would be the possibilities that I could get in a better university next year (I was thinking about U of Toronto).
fyi, my problem is that I may not have a proper accounting background, neither have I taken >2 accounting courses, nor have I interned in any accounting firms. I did well in my graduate school, but my undergrad gpa is a little ugly I'm afraid..and I could hardly find anyone who has a similar background.. And thank you so much for your help. Appreciate it!
Hi myfriend, and thanks for your follow-up. For MSA programs, many of the very goodones are not located in big cities. For example, UT-Austin, UIUC, and BYU arein suburban areas. However, they all have great connections with excellentcompanies in the industry, like the “Big Four.” Honestly, accounting is similarto an engineering or science major in the business world because you need to havea varied skillset and know a lot of techniques. As an international student, you may have more opportunities in finding a full-time job with an MSA degree. Unfortunately, for this year’s application process, time is not on your side. Many schoolshave already stopped accepting new applicants, and most deadlines have passed. For your situation, I’d suggest checking out Baruch, but maybe thinkaboutapplying for next year’s class. If you can gain more experience in a long-terminternship after you graduate from your current MSF program, it will be hugelyhelpful.----Jon Frank
Thanks to share the information Jon! well, it's the Master of Accounting program I am applying for though. Brandeis and BU don't have MSA, and I have missed the deadline for BC. Can you please recommend some more universities where international students' placements are good? I was thinking about Baruch too, but not so sure about others. Thank you very much! C.
Hi myfriend, and thanks for your follow-up! Based on the quick information you’veprovided, it’s clear that you have an awesome educational background. Sinceyou’re already an MSF student here in the US, are you looking to get a seconddegree in the same area? Or are you looking to get a Master’s degree insomething other than finance? For MSFstudents, location is crucial for job-hunting after graduation. You’d optimallywant to look for programs in Boston, New York, and Chicago. I’d suggest youcheck out Brandeis, Boston College, Boston University, Baruch College, PaceUniversity, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Loyola University. Hope this helps, and let me know if you need anything else!---Jon Frank
Hi Jon! Thank you so much for ur reply! please, recommend me some good universities in the 3 big cities you mentioned. Currently I only applied Fordham. But F requires lots of accounting background that I don't have. fyi, I'm a MSF student in the US now, and I did my undergraduate in the UK. C.
Hi there!Let me begin by saying I totally agree that ranking is not the sole factor you need to consider. Especially when thinking about future job hunting, there are many other important factors that will come into play. As for your specific question, generally speaking, it is a bit easier for accounting majors to get jobswhen compared with other business majors. Since accounting is a basic elementin all businesses, there are always many job opportunities in this field. Also, you need to train hard and master many techniques in order to become a great accountant. If you choose to study accounting, I’d suggest you to take the CPA test. When considering programs, look into good locations like New York, Boston, or Chicago. Location is a big factor in helping you secure a great job after you graduate. Hope this helps!
