Hi there,my first piece of advice would be to separately evaluate each school on your list. Here’s the thing: different schools are looking for specific kinds of candidates, and that might be VERY different from one school to the next. UIUC and Brandeis, for example, value work experience a lot. If you don’t have relevant work experience, it’s much harder to get into a program at either of these schools. Also, these programs may not be the best fit for you for a variety of other reasons. Really dig into the specifics of each program and see which one best meets your needs & experience.
You also mentioned that you might have a good recommender. If the person writing the recommendation is a professor or comes from the academic side of your life, I’d recommend checking out programs that prefer students with strong academic or research experience, like Vanderbilt or Washington University in St. Louis.
Hope this helps! If you need some more advice, don’t hesitate to contact me.
