主要是对the placement of modifier有疑问，总觉得E选项里面的in the past位置怪怪的，如果改成it would have conceded previously to rivals又怎么说呢？跪求大牛解答！！谢谢。

as作為conj，可以表示during（在...時）/because/In thesame way as（比較）
所以這裡的as表示因為。
it would in the past have conceded to rivals.
這裡是用了虛擬語氣，表示對過去虛擬。previously一般用於simple past tense。
in the past如果放在rivals後面，可以理解成在過去的rivals，放在would後面就不會有歧義，修飾動作。
