It is the popular wisdom that praise can bring some good while criticize will do some harm to people's emotion and behavior. After all, it's human nature to enjoy the encouragement while avoid the hurting words. However, when it comes to the best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones, especially when the author generalize it to the realm of educator, employer or parent, I suspect the directness and effectiveness of this path. Meanwhile, I think the statement fails to weigh the benefits against the costs, or harm, that might accrue along the way.
Admit it or not, it is the standard practice for us to emphasis on praise good actions while ignore the negative ones. Praise from parents can raise our self-esteem and confidence. Praise from teachers can make us try to be excel and achieve a sense of superiority. Praise from our supervisor can cultivate a better environment and ensure us to fulfill our potential and try to do our best. Also, sometimes we can sense our faults even no one else tell us. And when we feel we are forgiven by others, we can do even better than we ever thought.
However, accompanying all the boons of focus on praising positive actions while ignoring the negative ones have come some detrimental effect, and making us repeat our mistakes is the prominent one. Though we can find mistakes made by ourselves sometimes, it's the common sense that since we are not omnipotent we all have some problems we can never identify. Critics or suggestion from others can bridge the gap between our behavior and correct or perfect.
Furthermore, by ignoring the negative actions often come some opposite affect on what we intended or hoped for. Not every one in the world is on the pinnacle of moral. Without the punishment from outside, some one will go further on the road of bad things rather than back to the good road. What is worse, by doing negative things without others criticize we may find ourselves sanctioning all the inappropriate behaviors, including crime.
If we can find an approach both meet the need of protecting our feeling and generate the good behavior, we would have a sustainable way to reduce the debate on this issue. The task is open-ended and it will never be finished. But a conscious effort to crack these hard nuts will definitely be helpful.
