Issue: the best way to teach to to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones

Regarding to the effectiveness of teachingmethod, in my view, both praise and criticizing are indispensable, althougheach of them has different functions respectively.

Some people argue that the best way toteach is to praise positive actions only, which may seem to be a bit of naïve.I concede that by praising positive actions, the advantages and good behaviorsare emphasized so that the person being praised would be more confident andmore passionate in the things he/she does, or even they could be led by the interestprovoked by a little bit of affirmation from others, yet, by only emphasizingone’s good sides cannot always help with one’s self-improvement.

First of all, at least sometimes, teachingis effective only by pointing out the wrongdoings. This is evident in theteaching of science subjects, especially math, because, for instance, how can astudent improve if the teacher ignores the obvious mistakes in the arithmetic problemthe student is working on? In fact, the student can only enhance his/herability in math by knowing where he/she was wrong and try to do it better nexttime. From this perspective, ignoring negative ones in teaching may not seem tobe correct all the time.

Another thing to be mentioned is theattitudes towards criticizing of different people. Indeed, for some people, criticizing is not welcomed and they regard it as a degradation of theirself-reputation. However, there are some who really want to excel seekingcriticism from others so that they can know better about themselves, since theoutsiders may be more clear of the situation than the insiders.

In addition to this, criticism can serve asa source of motivation for improvement, even when sometimes criticism is harshand undesirable. Deng Yaping, the celebrated Chinese ping-pang player, wascriticized as a woman never suitable for table tennis by one of the famouscoaches in China at her time. Facing with this harsh negative comment, Dengkept on working to show that she could excel among all other players throughdiligence and persistency. The story has a happy ending that Deng became theworld champion in Olympic Games and her story has always been regarded as oneof the legends of success through effort to confront other people’s criticism.

One of the other benefits of criticism isthat people can learn from mistakes so that they can avoid making the samemistakes in the future. Just as the saying goes, “ one should not step into thesame river twice”, failures and wrongdoings are valuable assets for peopleembracing the future. Business people, especially entrepreneurs, will alwayswant feedbacks from their customers, a lot of which are negative comments onthe products and services, so that they can adjust their business strategiesand service procedures to provide their customers with better products andimproved services. The success of social networking websites, such as Facebook, comes largely from this kind of feedbacks.

In summary, although praise is one of theimportant factors to motivate a person to be successful, criticism is equallyessential in the way towards utter success. Only by the combination of praiseand criticism in teaching others can this teaching activity really beeffective.

Argument:
题目是关于:The following appeared in an article written by Dr. Karp, an anthropologist.
写作要求:evidence

In the argument, Dr. Karp claims that the conclusions drawn by Dr. Field are invalid and his method of research is also not favored while Dr. Karp’s own studying method is the one with more accuracy and his conclusions are correct. After closer examination of the claim, however, several evidences should be provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this claim.

First of all, since Dr. Field’s study was conducted 20 years ago, more evidence is needed to show that the cultural traditions of child-rearing has not changed a lot over time on the island of Tertia. It could be the case that because of the economic development and cultural invasion from the outside world to the island, the cultural tradition was largely influenced by culture from other parts of the country or there was a change in the concept of family and children among the residents on the island. In this way, Dr. Field’s conclusion may not be invalid, and it is just that his conclusion is suitable for the situation 20 years ago but not nowadays.

Secondly, Dr. Karp’s research was done in a group of islands including Tertia so that the conclusion is drawn from interviews of residents from all those islands. Here we need more evidence to show if the cultural traditions of child-rearing are relatively the same for all those islands. Since people living on Tertia could travel to other islands, cultural traditions could be influenced by this kind of frequent interactions between people on several islands and the purity of the cultural tradition of Tertia may not be preserved, thus the conclusions of Dr. Karp could be inaccurate.

Moreover, after interviewing with children on Tertia, Dr. Karp concluded that those children were brought up by their biological parents simply because they spent much more time talking about them. The evidence that talking more about biological parents equals living with biological parents needs to be provided because those children may just be curious about their biological parents so that they talked more about them in order that someone could give them clues for their parents.

And since it is a research interview, we need further information about the accuracy of the questions during the interview and whether the children are giving their honest opinions. For instance, if the questions are strongly directed that the children cannot avoid talking about their biological parents, or if the children are under the pressure of adults other than their parents to show their concerns about their biological parents, the interview could be rather misleading.

Finally, even if Dr. Field’s conclusions are invalid and Dr. Karp’s are valid, one cannot say that the research method observation is inferior to the interview-centered one without showing more evidence in the specific research plan and the actual application of the methods during the researches. Dr. Field may not be good at observing cultural traditions, but others might be really good doing this and giving accurate accounts to descriptions of culture traditions, and vice versa for Dr. Karp. It could also be that the research team of Dr. Field’s was not interested in the topic so that they spent most of the time idling around and gave a wrong description of the child-rearing traditions to Dr. Field, and unfortunately Dr. Field did not notice that because he was not with his team during the research, yet he trusted his team because of previous successes. In a word, different methods have different effects if different people are using them and we should not deny the benefits of a method simply because of one research failure.

In summary, Dr. Karp’s assertion that his conclusions and method are superior to that of Dr. Field’s is not convincing without more evidence on the change of cultural traditions of Tertia, the impact of interaction of residents on the cultural traditions, the effectiveness of the research conducted with Tertia children and the detailed research activities of both of the anthropologists.
