01    Listen to a conversation between two students.

So how do you like living in the renovated dorm?

They are not much different than the old dorms. Just some new paint and windows. The windows are nice though. They shout out noise very well. The street is just outside, but I can barely hear the traffic.

Mmm… they must be good windows. On that they have double panes of glass. That shouts a lot of noise that a single pane wouldn’t stop.

Ya, I wish I had something just desiccates between me and my neighbor’s room. Sometimes he turned the music so loud that I have trouble getting to sleep. Anyway, I guess I am better off than the people will be moving into the new dorms. Did you see how thin the walls are that they are putting up between those rooms?

I haven’t seen them, but I did read something about them in the campus newspaper. They are supposed to be better than the thick concrete walls that you have got here.

 Better? How?

Well, what they are doing is separating each room with 2 thin layers of plaster boards. And each one is named to a different pram. That avoids vibrate independently.

Oh, I see. So the sound from one room doesn’t just vibrate the wall and go directly into the next room. There is a gap between the 2 layers of the wall.

 That’s right.

Well, I am so stuck with this neighbor and I am not sure what to do.

You know, having barrier walls doesn’t help. You should hang something up like small rugs or some decorative cloths. That would act like a kind of a second wall and absorb some of the sound. I’ve got some extras that you can use if you like.

I appreciated it, anything that can get a good night sleep.

02     Listen to part of a discussion in a bookstore.

Can I help you find something? Oh, hi Rick.

Oh hi, Julie, when did you start working here? I thought you were waiting tables at Teresa’s café.

Yeh, I quitted because I had to work too many nights. I started here just a few days ago. It’s perfect. I work all afternoon shifts, so my morning is free for classes and I can study at night. So what’re you looking for?

Well, I can’t seem to find the 8th book for English six to six. I have only found these seven. I am probably looking right at it.

Mmm… English six to six. English six to six. Are you sure there are 8th?

Ya, there are 8 title comment syllabus. And look, the card on the shelf has it listed. But I can only find 7 of the books.

You are right. Oh, here they are. They are on the wrong shelf over here by the economics books. I’ll have to put these with the English books so that they are not so hard to find.

Thanks a lot. Could you point me at the direction of computer paper?

Sure, it’s 2 or 3 aisles over. Why don’t you follow me, it’s easier just to show you.

03         Listen to the conversation between a student and her academic advisor.

Janet. Nice to see you again. Ready to plan your schedule for next semester?

Ya, I have already looked at the list of classes and I hope to take business law and intro to finance this coming semester.

That sounds good. And it is always best to plan the courses in your major first and then for other requirements and elective then.

I would like to take one other business course, but I am not sure which one.

 How about an economics course?

I took one this past semester and got a lot out of it.

Oh, that’s right. I remember you were telling me about it. Well, let’s see what else you need.

I need another English course and was thinking about taking a poetry class.

Let me see. The prerequisitory for all of the poetry classes is English composition.

I took that my 1st semester.

Well, modern American poetry fits into your schedule.

 With Dr. Turnwa?

 Mmm…

That’ll be great. I’ve heard all about her from my roommate, the English major.

This is shaping up to be a pretty good semester for you. What else do you need to take?

I have to take one more Math class, but I wasn’t putting it at all. I heard that Calculus is really tough.

It is. But you may want to take it. And just take these 4 courses this semester.

That’s not a bad idea. I just hope it doesn’t affect my grade point average.

04         Listen to a conversation between 2 students outside the university dining hall.

Excuse me. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

 No, I guess not.

Great. This is for a student council report. We want to find out what’s students think of the campus’ school service. The result propel a 4 times of changes to push for.

I guess everyone has pretty strong opinions about that.

Ya, that’s one thing I found out already.

OK, first, how often do you eat in the cafeteria?

Almost everyday. I’ve got a meal contract.

And do you usually eat here in Anderson hall?

 Ya, I live next door.

And you mentioned that you have a meal contract. Is that right?

Unh-Hun. For breakfast and dinner, Monday through Saturday.

What’s your general impression of the food here?

Well, people complained a lot. I think it’s basically ok. The vegetable is usually over-cooked. Well, I mean they have to feed hundreds of people here. You are not going to get something freshly prepared just for you.

What if I just put down “generally satisfactory. Would like more fresh vegetables.” Ok?

Sure. So you think the other things, like soup and dessert. They are ok?

 Ya, that’s about right.

Is there anything you like to change about the cafeteria?

Ya, the hours. Sometimes it’s a real rush for me to get back here before 6:30.

Why is the woman talking to the man?

 05

Excuse me. I need a copy of Steven Hokins “a brief history of time”. And I don’t know where to look for it.

Did you status on the school library’s computer?

I tried but I couldn’t figure out what to do.

Well, I can call it up right here. You want the Hokins book, right? It looks like it will be out for another six weeks.

Oh no, I really need it for a paper that’s due in two weeks. Is there anything you can do?

Sure, we can try to get it from another library. Just fill out this form and it should be here in 3 to 5 days. But it will cost two dollars.

What a relief! This will really help.

 06

Good morning. Is this where we should come to add or drop a course?

Yes it is. Just write the name of the course you want to drop on this blue form.

Great! Now where do I write an Astronomy course that I want to add?

Sorry. It’s too late to add a course. You can only add courses two weeks since the semester, and Friday was the last day.

But I am a senior. And if I drop a class without adding one, I won’t have enough credits to graduate.

So what you have to do then is get the professor approval and have him sign a special add form. Then bring it back to me and I will put it through.

Ok thanks. I hope I will be able to find them.

07         You may now change the …

Hi there, we miss you in the psychology class yesterday.

I had a terrible cold. So I stayed home. Did you take notes?

Well, no one can ever decide for my handwriting. Tina was there, too. And you are more likely to be able to read her notes.

Do you know where she is today?

I know she has class in the morning, but she always eats lunch at the cafeteria around noon.

Good. I will try to catch her then.

08         Listen to a conversation between two students.

So you are going to be writing for the school newspaper?

Yes, I am excited about it. I am thinking about journalism as a career.

Well, congratulations. How do they decide who to hire?

I had to submit a writing sample. I used one of the essays I wrote for the literature class. Then the editor assigned me a topic to write a short article about.

 What did you write about?

Actually it was a lot of fun. I wrote about the student play that’s being performed this month.

Oh, I saw that play. The director is a friend of mine. It’s really causing a stir around here.

I know. That’s what I wrote about. People’s reactions to it. It was really interesting.

Have you finished the article? Can I read it?

Sure. I just made a couple of copies. So you can have one.

Thanks. I wish I were a better writer. Working for the papers sounds like fun.

Well, they are looking to add one or two more photographers to the staff.

You are kidding! Maybe I will go over and apply.

If you want, I will walk over with you to the newspaper office and introduce you to the photography editor in front of the other photographers.

That will be terrific. But can we go tomorrow? I have to go to Math class now. And if we go tomorrow, then I’ll have time tonight to put together a portfolio of photos to show them

Sure, and maybe you should call and set up a time to meet them tomorrow.

Good idea. I will do that before I go to class.

 Alright, see you tomorrow.

09         Listen to a conversation between 2 students.

Hey Kevin, I haven’t seen you since the beginning of the semester. How is everything going?

Well, I am a little over-whelmed. It’s strange. I always wanted to go to a big university like this. But now that I am here, I am not so sure. I mean the courses are interested enough, but…

 What’s bothering you then?

Well, after going to a small high school and knowing everybody, it’s a shocking to be in huge lecture halls with hundreds of students. And not one professor even knows my name.

I know what you mean. I felt pretty lost myself last year. But I know about something that may help, it’s called the mentor group.

 The what?

The mentor group. It’s like a support group. I joined last year when I was a first year student.

 So what is it?

It’s basically professors and small groups of students getting together informally to discuss all kinds of subjects. You’ll have a chance to meet professors and other students.

 Mmm… sounds worthwhile.

But doesn’t that take up a lot of studying time?

Not really. You can’t study all the time, you know. And this is like a little break.

I guess you could meet a professor whose course you might take later.

Exactly. That’s what happened to me. I am taking the psychology class with Mr. Green. I didn’t know how interesting psychology was until I got to talk to him in the mentor group.

You talk me into it. Is it too late to join?

I don’t think so. If I were you, I’ll go over to the dean’s office and sign up.

I was going to go to the library to return a book, but I can do that later, I guess.

10         Listen to a conversation about an architecture class.

Interesting lecture today, didn’t you think?

Well, I suppose. But I have never heard the Bauhaus and I am not clear on something. Was it some place you’d go to, or was it more of a joiner or movement of some sort? You know like the rural impressionism.

No, it was an actually design school located in Germany, founded by Walter Gropius. His goal was to combine technical skill with artistic talent. And by doing this creates a new form of architecture and applied arts.

OK, so that explains why xxx people had to study the resource of craft person and an artist.

Right! Before anybody can actually begin their formal training, they had to take workshops that were taught by boat or craft person who have precise technical expertise and an artist.

 Interesting!

And the Bauhaus founders also departed from the notion of art speeding of formal luxury objects. They want to produce functional art to be enjoyed by everybody. Not just the wealthy.

Were they making some sort of social statement?

Perhaps… I don’t know. But it did mean that the Bauhaus’ creation has its own artistic beauty. And that instead of being individually handicraft, like something you’ve seen in a … I don’t know… classic cathedral. They were produced by machines in large quantities.

 Is the Bauhaus still around?

I don’t think so. But judging on the amount of time on our class schedule that we are going to be devoting to it, it’s a fact must about lifted.

11         Listen to two students discussed the architect Albert Kahn.

Didn’t you write a paper about Albert Kahn last semester?

Yes, on my history of architecture class.

Well, I am taking it now and I have got to do some research about industrial architecture. I need to read up on Kahn’s factories. So I’d like to see what you wrote about them.

I don’t think my paper will help. I focused on his classical designs, like the Clements library in his office building. While you are interested in as a modernist building he is famous for.

Yes, he is best known for his factories, especially the auto plant in Detroit. He made a breakthrough in industrial design. You know, before his time, factories were so cramped and inefficient. But his factories provided enough light and air, and open-spaces, so the cars could be assembled in a large plant.

I remember reading the factories used to have wooden frames. And the heavy machines even made the building vibrate. And they were a fire hazard too. But when Kahn started designing auto plants around the term of the century, reinforced concrete had just been invented. Talk about breakthroughs, not only were his buildings sturdy and fire-proof, but they were cheap to put up too.

You seem to know about his industrial career.

Actually even though I wrote about his other work, I did a lot about his background reading. Let me see if I can dig out that paper for you. There were some books and articles I included in my bibliography that you might want to look up at the library.

12         Listen to a discussion between two students as they study for a zoology exam.

Now let’s see professor Stone spent a lot of time talking about how animals walk and run. I remember she started by describing how humans move. And later we went over the case of different two-leg and four-leg animals. Cats, camels, lizards…

Wait, I think I missed the class when you went over how lizards move. At least I don’t have any notes on it.

Well, we talked in class about how modern reptiles, like lizards, run. I think I even copied the diagram that professor drew on the board. Here it is. Now look at this. Lizard runs with what’s called a sprawling gate. Their feet are well-out on either side of the body. And they move diagonally opposite feet together, the left fore foot with the right hind foot and the right fore foot with the left hind foot. They use this way of moving when they are going slowly or quickly. When they move, they bend their bodies from side to side. And they time this bending so that it increases the length of their steps.

Ok, that makes sense. But I remember reading that in general, animals are evolved so that their feet are right under their bodies. But I don’t see why.

Well, that’s because even thought the spawling gate suits the lizards very well, there is a major disadvantage to this arrangement. Reptiles can’t run and breathe at the same time. They stop briefly between short burst of anywhere from 2 to 12 stripes. Because when they move from side to side, the muscles of the left and right sides contract at different time. To breath though, these muscles have to contract at the same time. Mammals don’t have this problem because they don’t move from side to side. Their feet are in a different position.
