Universities should require every studentto take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study. Recently, a new issue has been hotlydiscussed that whether the university should require its students to takevarious courses that are outside of their major field. The author assertedthat various curriculums are needed foruniversity students. I agree with this claim to some extent. Taking a varietyof courses will be salutary for students to gain a more profound understandingof their own major field knowledge and even the world. However, a forcing requirementwill be unnecessary. It may leads to a counterproductive result. In the first place, students would benefita lot from the variety of courses. Students could get an opportunity to gainknowledge out of their own major field, broaden their horizons, and also givethem a breath from the burdensome study. For example, a student whose majorfield is politics could have artistic courses like opera. Learning opera couldrelease him or her from the heavy pressure of the study. Moreover, it alsoprovides a chance to enhance himself or herself artistic education, which islacking of in the high paced society. In this sense, a various courses are necessaryto some degree. Variety of courses could do more than what Isaid above. All the knowledge are interrelated as everyone knows. For instance,Nash, a mathematician who get the Noble economic prizes with the other twoco-winners who are also mathematicians, has a great impact on politic andeconomic science because of his game theory. So it will be clear that learninga variety of curriculums could help the university students to make a moredeeply and widely understanding of their major field knowledge and even theworld. We could not imagine that a students of management without knowledge ofpsychology, an anthropology students without knowledge of history and sociology. In this term, various curriculums seems necessary to help students to gain moreachievements in their major field study. However, a requirement of taking this kindof courses would be counterproductive. Students in the university already havea lot of onerous study task. In addition to taking classes, they have to dosome research, update their knowledge in time, attending different kinds oflectures that may be useful for their learning and life in universities. Sochances are high that an added curriculum would give them more pressure, evendetermine their own field study to the worst. But it does not rule out the necessityof taking some extra courses outside the students’ fields. Universities couldmake the extra courses as a selective courses, students could choose whatevercourses they would like to take. With this method, students would gain moreknowledge without getting extra pressure. To sum up, I conceive that universities shouldtake a various courses for students without a forcing requirement. The studentscan choose freely what selective courses to study. |
