In this argument, the author states a advise of the investment for a company named Consolidated Industries because of the potential profit it will gain in this winter. To demonstrate this suggestion is reasonable, the author argues that the most homes in the northeastern United States treat the oil as their major heating fuel source, and there will be a long-lasting winter and the population is increasing. However, this reasoning depends on the several unsubstantiated assumptions and is therefore unconvincing.
Firstly, the author's suggestions relies on such assumptions that these people live in the cold areas will continue use the oil as their major heating fuel source. Yet, the writer donor provide any evidence to justify this assumptions. So, there are such following possibilities, because of the higher price of the oil compared to the electric, and also it will cause no harm to environment, people change their traditional choice to electric. Even assuming that the people will continue use the oil as their major fuel source, the author has not convincingly demonstrate that using 90 days oils will bring great profit to the CI company. We are not sure that 90 days in these area for winter are long enough for the company to make earnings which will cover theri initial investment. Also, 90 days are long enough, the author does not make the prediction of the following cold weather convincing for lacking of the evidence that the climate forecasters are well-trained and as we all know, the weather forecast is always not accuracy. Therefore, lacking the reasonable evidence to show that the assumptions are reliable, the speaker cannot convince me that investment for this company is a good choice. Thirdly, the author mentions that population growth will contribute to the consumptions of the oil for heating relies on such assumption that the new population will buy new house. However, the author does not provide any evidence for this assumption. It is possible for the new people to choose for renting a house instead of purchasing a new house, of course, they also can live in their friends' houses which will not need more heating oil. Also, even the people buying a new house to live, there is a possibility that the new houses equipted with the clean-energy source for heating, such as electric mentioned in the first paragraph. Therefore, it is trust worth for me that the authors suggestions is not reasonable and thus unconvincing. In sum up, the author's advise for investment is ill-conceived and poorly supported for lacking the evidence to justify the assumptions the author relies on. |
