12. Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.

Nowadays, with people’s increasing awareness of the importance of education, more and more students are studying hard enough to succeed in getting admitted to universities, however, as a result of the high tuition, many promising students find themselves unable to afford such a expenditure, thus leaving them deprived of such an opportunity for improvement. Thus, some people propose that governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition. As for the statement above, however, despite some merits it may have, fundamentally I disagree with it because of its impracticability and its lack of taking other possible methods into consideration.

Admittedly, there is no denying the fact that a university education could provide students with benefits they could never gain from anywhere else. With respect to profession, four or five years in university could make students focus their attention on the study and research of their beloved major and get equipped with virtually all respects of the knowledge they may find useful when working. Also, a certificate of a not-so-bad university could benefit graduates a lot when applying for jobs because of the efforts and capacities of the students it represents. Furthermore, through various kinds of courses provided by university education, students could locate their real interest and find areas of study they have true enthusiasm in.

However, despite the merits above, a compelling argument in opposition to the statement above is that by offering free university education to all eligible students, it could entail undue burdens on government. As a result of high tuition and the huge number of university students, the government would inevitably allocate a high proportion of its tax revenue to universities, money otherwise could be used for more meaningful and imperative things such as building roads and developing impoverished and remote areas. Besides, a free education may also lead to degradation in the quality of both the universities and the students. Since universities are gratuitous, schools may feel that they are not so directly responsible for the future of its students and as for the students, since they and their families pay nothing and lose nothing, accordingly feel the opportunity for education is so easy that they may not treasure it and thus would not study hard enough.

Furthermore, despite the infeasibility of the statement above, it has neglected many other methods which could compensate for the fact that many students fail to go to universities for a lack of money. In fact, our government has done a lot to tackle the problem. In every university, there exists various kinds of scholarships, funds and even prizes set up by famous alumai or companies. As long as students are outstanding enough, they could gain these prizes as compensation for the tuition. Moreover, except form these awards, universities provide different job positions for students to self support themselves such as working in the libraries and so on. Also, students could themselves find part-time jobs outside the universities. It is true that they may feel tired, however, it is also a challenge conducive for their future development.

To sum up, it is undeniable that the government should do their best to guarantee that every eligible student could continue their studies in universities, however, it does not necessarily lead to the conclusion that universities should be free. In spite of the potential damage brought by a free university education, there are many other effective methods which could support the poor students.
