46. Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
A prevailing sound that universities should require students to take various courses including those subject outside of their original field has aroused a heated debate. Contrary to the sound, numerous people believe that it is those who are quite proficient in one field tend to be more successful in the future and contribute to the world and human being. Personally, I strongly support the claim though under some circumstances focusing on only one field seems promising.
Admittedly, we need experts because as normal human being, we have limited energy and time, so we need to attribute them wisely. How many Issac Newton have you heard of, who is not only experted in mathematics, but also a superstar, who created Three Laws of Newton, in Physics? That sort of case is too rare. But, several cases exist that due to his or her assiduous work and dedication and strong interest, his or her eventually received what they desired. For example, Bill Gates, who dropped out from Harvard for his enthusiasm for computer, created a software empire-Microsoft. Mark Zuckburg, who is obsessed with computer science, built an extraordinary Internet society-Facebook. It is true that under this sort of circumstance where you have a crazy interest in a kind of subject or field, concentrating on nothing but it will probably lead to success.
However, for university students, especially undergraduate students, taking diverse course is more wise. During undergraduate period, the main aim of students, to learn the word, how it looks like, how it works and etc., can hardly be achieved is they only focus on one or two field. Besides, by taking diverse classes and attending different activities, student can have a better understanding of themselves, encouraging them to develop their interest and discovering what they are good at. Also, there are a large group of students who intend to work after graduating from university instead of pursuing higher education in the future, and for them it is probably detrimental to focus on only one field. Numerous young adults today, for instance, idolize and even worshipSteve Jobs, ex CEO of Apple, and they probably want to be a leader like him, so this will require them to master a wide range of knowledge like management, communication skill, technology and charisma.
Moreover, even for those who decide to pursue a higher degree or dedicate in science, master more knowledge from other fields could also benefit them as in today's society interdisciplinary researches are more likely to gain attention and support, and thus be profitable. As a medical student, before we get enrolled in a medical school, we have to have a degree in Chemistry or Biology or Biochemistry, and the requisite outlines it crystal clear that what we are going to learn will include a wide range of fields. For example, before we apply a kind of new medicine, even it is still in trial, we have to do tests on animals first. In addition, when we were doing internships in Pediatrics(儿科), we even need to learn how to deal with children, requiring a sufficient knowledge in Pcycology. So, obviously, in this sort of case, knowledge in only one field is far from enough.
In sum, considering our basic nature - limited energy and time, focusing on only one field is reasonable to some extent. However, I still insist that universities should require students to take a variety of courses as no matter what we want to do in the future, gaining a wide range of knowledge will benefit us more, as I articulated above.
