Issue 82,97,100,124
Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.
I concede there are several merits in the speaker’s claim, It’s true that have a chance to live and study in another country can bring a lot of benefits such as satisfying one's interest, broaden horizon, improving knowledge structures and so on. After all, different cultures have different yet valid ways of seeing the universe and human society. However, the speaker falsely extends this broad assertion to every student while ignoring certain compelling reasons that not every student is interested or suitable for studying abroad.
I agree with the opinion that in certain circumstances, studying out of one's own country can be beneficial. It means not only taking some courses in a different education system, but also living in a distinct culture and routinely interacting with people from significantly different background. All of this will contribute to the "truly education", which, in my perspective, provides wisdom, innumerable lessons for living, and useful value-clarification and perspective—all of which help us decide how to live our lives.By accepting knowledge different from their own, students can learn more of the broad range of the human experience and broaden their vision by richer themselves for seeing beauty and truth in its many forms.
However, upon carefully reflection it becomes obvious that granted that it’s attempting to studying abroad, the author ignores that requiring every students to study abroad is not only impractical but can be counter productive as well. In the first place, not every student has the financial capability to study abroad. Although people’s lives have been dramatically promoted over the last decades, it must be admitted that, shortage of funds is still the one of the biggest issues that students nowadays have to face. Consider the giant gap between cities and countryside of China, while many of Shanghai's parents have the financial capacity to support their children studying abroad, whose threshold is much higher than taking courses in local. Ningxia's students may have to help their parents feeding the sheep in order to earn money to support their own study life. It’s just very difficult to reach a balance when there are so many differences in reality.
What is more, studying abroad usually need a good command of second language, which might be a huge barrier to some students. Even for those whose language skill are very good, the education systems can be significantly different. So they will have to take a while to adjust to the new curriculum. In certain extreme cases the classes are so different, the exchanging students have to drop their own syllabus to adjust to a completely new one. When they back home, they will have to catch up with the old one. On the other hand, consistency and stability in the study is critical for any education to function as a rule. This will cause a big drawback in one’s study.
Also, university students is an enormous amount, in China, it's about 7,000,000. Each of them studying abroad may bring about a disastrous impact on the receptive countries and schools. In order to accommodate exchange students, a lot of faculties should be arranged to coping with them which may cause shortage in satisfying the local ones. Also numerous transport and living facilities will be built, which may have certain unfavorable effects, such as serious atmospheric pollution and municipal refuse, on the environment.
In sum, I concede a satisfying curriculum allows students to enrich themselves in many ways. However, when it comes to the same national university requirement, with no doubt we should be sensible enough to eliminate the false and retain the true. Indeed, we can take a combination of measures to increase the opportunity of contacting with various cultures in domestic. Also, since education does not end with graduation, the students can go abroad whenever they want after graduation.
5. 总之^
