34. The vice president of humanresources at Climpson Industries sent the followingrecommendation to the company's president."Inan effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implementelectronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations.Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identifiedand punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal orrecreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installingsoftware to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can preventemployees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, andimprove our overall profits." Write aresponse in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of theargument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions andwhat the implications are for the argument if the assumptions proveunwarranted.
The center calling in this memo is arecommendation to install electronic monitor in order to reduce the waste timeof their employees, indicating that the overall profits, thus, will be improved. The reasoning given by the vice president, atfirst glance, seems logical, but he has not provided enough evidence tosubstantiate his assumption.
It is claimed in this memo that someemployees use computer for personal utilization, such as shopping and playinggame, which results in decrease of their productivity. However, the arguer fails to give us a validsurvey to show if this sort of phenomenon happens vary common or even exists ,though it is entirely possible. Withoutsuch a survey or say investigation, the necessity of installing software todetect employees remains unknown. Therefore, an investigation is recommended among all employees toinvestigate their use of computers. Granted that it is a common phenomenon foremployees to spent time on personal and recreational activities using theircomputers, there is no evidence showing that we are able to prevent them fromwasting time by installing electronic monitors. An employee may be spending his workaday time to go shopping in shoppingmall rather than to do it via internet if he knows his computer is beingmonitored, which is going to be a much waste of time than before. So the assumption that the installation ofthis software will catalyze the productivity of employees, made by the vicemanager, is not well backed. Having some personal time while being tired ofwork could be a good thing to promote employees moral; just as the saying goes:All work and no play, makes jack a dull boy. Beyond that, the manager should considermore details about the software and should value if it is worthy to dothat. It is probable that the electronicmonitor has a bad effect on our company's computer, it may slow down the speedof some program and thus influence the productivity. Even assuming that thisbehavior will improve the productivity of our workers, it is too hasty to saythat our overall profits will be improved considering the expense of thissoftware. More detailed information about the software and the cost of itshould be taken into account before the final decision is made. In short, it is superficial to simplydecide the installation of electronic monitor. A thorough investigation should be deployed to investigate employees'use of computers and the further info about the software, since there may beother more effective way to improve the employees' productivity and overallprofits. |
