As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

In a time of increasing globalization, humanity is relying more and more on technology, whether it is through instant communication or technological advancements and discoveries. By doing so, cultures become dependent on technology and begin to rely on it to solve problems. While this development has its definite advantages, one downside is that machines and developments seem to do the majority of thinking for people in the 21st century. On one hand, a major problem that technology has dealt with is the issue of communication. Within 100 years, people have gone from writing letters and waiting days or weeks to get responses from acquaintances, to having instant and constant access through dozens of communication avenues such as phone calls, text messaging, video calls, smartphones, and social media. By solving communication issues and barriers, people now have 24/7 access to one another. This is quite an accomplishment. However, in solving one problem, instant communication has created new issues, such as privacy, increasing misuse of time management, and less time to think critically about things. Because people have the option to be available all day every day through their communication devices or social media outlets, privacy is becoming less and less respected. Incriminating photos could be posted on somebody’s Facebook page that may lead to them losing a job, or by constantly exposing themselves by posting locations, photos, or statuses, people risk being put in dangerous situations. An even bigger issue, particularly for high school and college students, is time management. It is so easy to grow addicted to the Internet, or spend hours on smartphones, surfing the web, social media sites, etc., and therefore neglecting homework or studying. People focus on short and non-thought out means of communication such as text messages, slang, comments, statuses—and begin to grow shallow and often foolish, neglecting actual people and real-life encounters for preferences of texting, Skyping, Facebook chatting, etc, which in turn reduces social skills. Additionally, the Internet and smartphones offer millions of options and apps that do all the thinking for people. With these things at humanity’s disposal, it is so easy to sit back and let the computers do the thinking. And so, students and adults alike are becoming slaves to technology—while advanced communication technology is a sophisticated feat on one hand, it also works as a distraction and contributes to the decline of people thinking for themselves. One question that should be in everyone’s minds is, “When will the advancement of technology stop?” Will it continue growing until people are secondary to machines? Will civilizations spiral out of control if for some reason technology, that we have relied on for so long, begins to fail us? We rely on technology more and more, and the instant communication discussed above is just one example of technology’s good and bad sides—but there are thousands of examples in which technology is causing people’s thinking for themselves to deteriorate. In the end, I think that the advancement of technology and our dependence on it can be a dangerous thing, because as computers and technological advancements do more of the thinking and functioning for us, humanity may eventually sit entirely back and forget how to do the most basic tasks.
