Issue140: Some people believe that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study. Others believe that universities should not force student to take any courses other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields.
- It has been a complex and controversial issue that which should be preferred in college curriculum, a profound basis of diverse course or a solid foundation for future career? Based on different background and respective, people hold even opposite standpoint, as claimed by the author: some tend to stress the wide range of knowledge while some others prefer the applicability of the course in the future. In my point of view, both proposals are biased to some extent. In stead of choosing one from the two, it is more advisable to cooperate and balance between the two, because the two are not exclusive.
- One reason for my view is that, it costs o lot to request every student to take various kinds of courses. Firstly, not every university or college can provide a great quantity of courses with assurance of the quality, nor need they. Secondly, it is impossible for the undergraduates to learn all kind of courses outside their major, for the limitation of time and ability. Thirdly, it is entire possible that the requirement of variety of courses will lead to weariness of study, which will counterproductive inhibits further learning. For these considerations, it is unreasonable to overemphasize the too wide range of courses. What’s more, if the proposal is followed, the colleges and universities will lost their distinctiveness and personality; the students will lost their essential specialization and delving in their field; even, the undergraduates will lost their personality and creativity with an indiscriminate curriculum. For these considerations, it is unreasonable to overemphasize the too wide range of courses.
- However, it is another extremity to limit the curriculum to the courses that benefit the future career. Firstly, with the development in refinement of the division and in intensification in interdependent of the cross of disciplines, it is unpredictable which profession will be more profitable in four years. Secondly, even assuming that the ridiculous recommendation is followed, numerous students flush into several confined majors, which appears to be profitable in the following years, labor and resource surpluses will be inevitable. What’s more the concentration in several avocations will lead to impediment of newly developing fields. If these scenarios come into reality, college education would be a failure.
- Actually by finding a balance, it is feasible to cooperate knowledge diversity with occupational planning, because in the phase of college education, students always major in areas which are interesting to them. In fact, interest is the best motivation and best guidance. So by taking the two factors into consideration, several enjoyable courses outside the major will benefit the students most while waste of resources and weariness of study will be also avoided. What’s more, students will be educated to have capacities in every practical progress and the ability to ability for future personal fulfillment.
- In sum, only when universities balance the factor of diversified knowledge basis and career preparation, education will achieve it’s mission to transfigure both the individuals and the society.
