题目:"It has long been believed that getting at least eight hours of sleep a night is good for health. But a recent six-year study of adult sleeping habits found that people who reported sleeping eight or more hours a night had a higher rate of certain health problems than did those who reported sleeping seven hours a night. People who reported sleeping five hours a night also had an increased rate of the health problems, but this increase was slight compared to that for people who reported sleeping eight or more hours a night. Clearly, people should try to get seven hours of sleep, and they should worry more about getting too much sleep than too little."
In this argument, the arguer argue that according to a six-year study of adult sleeping habits, a traditional common sense that getting at least eight hours of sleep a night is good for health is disproved. In order to qualify his new finding, the arguer point out that in this study, people who sleep eight or more hours a night suffer a higher rate of certain health problems than dis those who reported sleeping seven hours a night. Also, in the meantime, these people are in higher risk of developing health problems compared to people who only sleepfive hours a night. Therefore, the arguer concludes that it will be appropriate for adults to sleep seven hours per night, and they should weigh more worries on getting too much sleep than too little. However, although the conclusion seems compelling at the first glance, it is virtually not tenable enough because the supporting evidences are vulnerable. First of all, the reason that the arguer draws the conclusion that the most appropriate sleeping time per night for people is seven is deduced from the result of the result that adult who sleep eight or more hours a night had a higher rate of certain health problems than did those who reported sleeping seven hours a night. However, the auger does not provide any assurances to preclude other reasons that may lead to such a difference between two groups. For example, it is totally possible that most people who sleep seven hours per night in this study habituate to have a one hour morning walk per day. Therefore , it may be the morning walk that helps them to lower the risk in developing certain health problems rather than the one more hour sleep that causes the people who sleep eight hours per nightsuffering from a higher risk in developing healthy problems. Also, the arguer also assume that people should worry more about getting too much sleep than too little because the result of the study also show that the increased rate of the health problems for the people who sleep only five hours per night is insignificant. First of all, the arguer also unfairly assume that the risk difference between the people who sleep five hours per night and the benchmark who sleeps two more hours per day is caused from the difference between the sleep hours rather than other possible factors. Even we ignore such a conspicuously week assumption, and assume it is right, the result that increased rate of the health problems is lower for the people who sleep too little than those who sleep too much may still be wrong. Because it is unreasonable to use the people who sleep five hours per night to represent thewhole group which is defined as sleep too little. For example, there may be a exponently increase of risk in developing healthy problems if the sleep time is reduced to only four hours per night. Furthermore, even the two results of the study mentioned above are true, it is still unacceptable for the arguer to expand his generalization to all people because all the participants in this study are adults. For example, It is very possible that the children need much more sleep hours because they are developing their bodies. Therefore, the author's conclusion is still too far from convincing if it is just based on current limited evidences. In order to eliminate other possible alterations, the arguer must prove that the difference in sleep hours is the onlyreason that cause the difference in developing healthy problems. Also, in order to justify his claims, the arguer must take the people who sleep less than five hours per night into account. Besides, he must show some evidences to demonstrate that the results of the study can expand its application to all people. Unless all the flaws mentioned above are modified, the arguer's conclusion can be classified as cogent.
