    The indicators to measure a country's well being are different. The author argues that people's welfare of a country is the most important measure instead of the accomplishments of artists, scientists, and politicians. However, I partly disagree with the statement. Diversification is a hallmark of a country's well-being, and people's welfare and artists, scientists,and politicians' achievements are interrelated to reflect country's prosperity.
    Admittedly, ensuring good welfare of people is one of the top priorities government should take, for the main function of governments in a culturalized nation is to constantly enhance the happiness of its people. Moreover,  good welfare is also a symbol of a rich and strong economically country. Most of the developed countries in the world provide a wonderful welfare which guarantees basic daily life of their people. People's welfare also mirrors that the country adheres to people-oriented philosophy, and beneficial to the country's stability; Stability of a country is the groundwork for cultivating scientists, artists,and politicians. Hundreds schools of thought  contend only when people are living a good living. Hardly any significant scientific and artistic progress when people are living in destitute. Although science, art and politics are above life to some extent, they all stem from life. If wealth polarization, numbing emotion, and thought constraint occur,
    On the other hand, science, art, and politics are the condense of people's everyday life, which reflect a country social life and thoughts, since they correspond to different levels of a country's "mentality". Every time when a country is trapped in poverty and war, art, science and politics wither and they are under huge depression. For example, during WWII, almost the whole Europe got involved in the war, completely ignoring the development of art, science, and politics. The prosperity of a country concurrents with the prosperity of science, art,and politics.
    In addition, people's focus on their welfare is somewhat circumscribed and shortsighted, since people are temporally and provisionally satiated. In the contrast, science, art and politics achievement are imminent and last forever, and make huge contribution to the wealth of all human beings. Deng xiaoping,who was once the president of China, courageously took the open-up policy ,which spurs China to grow at an overwhelming speed in economy, boosts the morales of constructing a prosperous country among the Chinese. Deng’ achievements to some extent reflect the preliminary victory for Chinese people.  Arts are another indicator that has the same function to indicate a great country with the rulers.  The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls, which well depicts the huge responsibility of artists in a nation to foster spiritual world of people. Monet, Picasso, and Jackson Pollack are all representatives of their relative schools, who left us significant amount of art wealth.
    In retrospect, the prosperity of a country can be reflected not only through the welfare of people, but more through artists, politicians, and scientists' achievement..
