我也有疑问，那个后边为什么不用the person 表示前边叙述的那个人换成站在地面的情况？为什么要用a person呢？

后面不用the person 而用 a person 是因为这个人不一定非得是同一个人啊，也可以是（按句义应该是）任意两个人，一个在船上，一个在岸上，看见的东西一样。

这里的would不可以理解为仅仅是时态问题吗？G was convinced that natural phenomena....would appear...中主句谓语动词是过去时，从句中除非有特殊情况也该用过去时吧~~
