28) The surest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but by the general welfare of its people.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
Every individual has his forte and every ethnic group has its pride, so does a nation. When we measure the greatness of a specific nation, social welfare acts as a vital role in our analysis and no one denies it. However, in my own perspective, impeccable general welfare alone is not sufficient when defining a nation as a great one, since there are still other factors, such as the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, contribute to the overall image of a country. Only by considering the factors listed above can we draw a convinced conclusion on whether a nation is great.
To begin with, intentionally emphasis on a particular aspect always implies the pinch of others. As is known to all, Norway is outstanding for its general welfare as well as natural scenery. Nevertheless, according to a recent survey held by 'New York Times', the impressive north European country ranks only around forty when nearly 40,000 participants around the world are asked for selecting the greatest country in their own mind. In light of this statistic result, one or two eminent aspect lacks persuasion in defining a country as a great one.As is said by one of the greatest political figure in China who names Sun Zi, forte is impressive, yet no defect leads to greatness.
Even granted that great nations all have eminent social welfare, logical flaw occurs when separating the amount of welfare and the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists. As a matter of fact, similar essence actually hides in the superficial confrontation. An old Chinese saying goes that peace cause prosperity, and prosperity fosters masters. Thus, inner relationship connects the factor of good welfare and the achievement of rulers and artists, rendering the two aspects, which are actually not opposite, make a nation great together.
Last but not least, the name 'greatness' should be bestowed to the nation which possesses spiritual strength and cultural accumulation. We consider China as a great country when Confucius laid the foundation of longevous Chinese culture in such a trouble period called 'Spring and Autumn 'that wars were everywhere, let alone welfare. We call China a great one when it was nearly in vain during the World War 2, yet never gave up fighting. However, We say China is ‘strong’ instead of ‘great’ due to its financial power nowadays, which contributes to an outstanding social welfare as all know.
To sum up, I hold the view that whether the welfare of its people, instead of the achievement of its rulers, artists, or scientists, indicates a great nation is such a complex problem that solutions raised by individuals are inevitably partial and incomplete. Nonetheless, the analysis mentioned above still provides an alternative idea in solving the problem.
