An ancient, traditional remedy for insomnia—the scent of lavenderflowers—has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteerswith chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks onlavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep wasmonitored electronically. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakenedfeeling tired. At the beginning of the second week, the volunteersdiscontinued their sleeping medication. During that week, they slept lesssoundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the thirdweek, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previoustwo weeks. Therefore, the study proves that lavender cures insomniawithin a short period of time. “Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is neededto evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken orstrengthen the argument.”;
The arguer conclude that lavender cures insomnia in a short time given a recent study of 30 volunteers suffering from chronic insomnia. In this study, volunteers were asked to sleep on a lavender-scented pillow and their sleep was monitored.Although the argument appears to be convincible at the first glance, some critical points,which require specific evidence to clarify,remain unclear.
Firstly,the design of the study need to be questioned. Evidence to indicate the sleep of volunteer without a lavender-scented pillow is needed. There is no control group, which is known to be the basic component of a experiment. What if volunteers sleep longer and more soundly without a lanvender-scented pillow? Thus, it is impossible to conclude the effect of the scent of lavender unless evidence about the control group is given. Furthermore, evidence that shows the effect after the study is needed. The argument concludes that the lavender cures insomnia but fails to provide follow-up effect of lavender. There is possibility that the volunteers who suffer from insomnia sleep less soundly after the study.
Secondly,granted that the design of the study is reasonable, evidence to indicate the sleeping condition before they took the three weeks study is needed. We cannot draw any conclusion without comparation between the sleep before and after the study. If the volunteer slept more soundly and felt less tired prior to the study,the argument would be weaken by the study.
Lastly, evidence is needed to show all other factors that might affect the sleep of volunteer remain constant during the period of study. Many factors affect sleep,for example,pressure from work. The arguer didn't provide evidence to ensure others factors remain constant. Other factors may play the major role in affecting the sleep of volunteer which the scent of lavender plays minor. Thus, the effect of scent of lavender remains unclear unless all other factors remains unchanged during the three weeks.
To sum up, the arguments need to be strengthen in three points. To begin with,The arguer need to provide evidence of control group, which is the sleep of volunteer without given a lavender-scented pillow. Then evidence to show sleeping condition prior to the study needs to be specified. Lastly, evidence to guarantee constant factors apart from lavender-scented pillow is needed. Only all evidence mentioned above is given, one can draw a conclusion that whether scent of lavender can cure insomnia.
