118. The following appeared as part of an article in a business magazine.
"A recent study rating 300 male and female advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than six hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. On the basis of this study, we recommend that businesses hire only people who need less than six hours of sleep per night."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
提纲: 1. Study 2. Six hours 3. All businesses
Argument:
In this article, the author recomment that businesses hire only people who need lees than six hours of sleep per night. To support his recommetation, the author cites a recent study, points out that those whose executives reported needing no more than six hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. While the conclusion is plausible at the first glance, close scrutiny of this argument reveals that the argument is unconvincing in many regards.
As for the study the author cites, a question that needs to be answered is whether the study is reliable enough before I can accept any conclusion the author arrives at based on it. However, the validity of that study is vague. Perhaps, the sample of 300 male and female advertising executives was not representative of the advitising firms, asking a biased proportion of gender people to study. Maybe in advitising firms, male executives are almost equal to female executives, but the study asking 90 percent male and only 10 percent female, while the hours men needs are quete different from women, leading to a biased study results. Perhaps the study was 15 pages long, and the responsidents did the questionaire halfheartedly. We just do not know. Only if the study is fully valid, representative, and reliable, can it use to back the author’s argument.
Additonally, the author implies that the executicces’ no more than six hours of sleep is the reason why a company gets higher profit margins, then a question is on the way: is the executices’ no mro than six hours of sleep leads to the higher profit margins? In fact, the author never establishes direct relationship between the two incidences. It is likely that the tense competition among the advitising firms’ executives, they have to shorten their sleeping hours to do more work, in case being washed out. Thus it is the strict management and the tense conmpetition, rather than the fact that exetitives sleep for no more than six hours, that contributes to the higher profit margins. Without accounting for and ruling out this and other alternative explanations, the author cannot bolster the recommendation.
Furthermore, even if his/her deduction and inference made in the argument above is true, the author still fails to perform afeasibility analysis of the racommendation that bussiness hire the executives who needs no more than six hours’ sleep. Is the situation in advertising firms suits for all the businesses? The autor hasitily believes so. It is likely that in some business, people need more hours for sleeping to getting enough energy to work, such as coaches in some healthy clubs. It is also likely that some people do suit the job and have much talents in that field, however, need more than six hours for sleep because of their habits. The arthor’s reasoning is definitely flawed unless the author can convince me that these and other possible scenarios are unlikely.
Pursuing higher profit margins, firms may take much into consideration. However, the recommendation the author makes is invalid and misleading, based on my above analysis. They cannot expect a higher profit margins if they just make the decision. Creful analysis of all the respects I have presented is the best first step to a better results |
