115. Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather thanunquestioningly carry out the will of the people whom they serve.
Writea response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree withthe statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Indeveloping and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which thestatement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerationsshape your position.
Iconcede that the ability to make wise decision is significant for governmentofficials, but will of the mass is also important in determining politicaljudgments.
Firstof all, government officials are usually those who are outstandingindividuals with exceptional wit, foresight and discernment.Being well-trained and professional in politicalfield, they can make sensible decisions based ontheir own judgments. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, for example, successfully saved Americafrom the Great Depression, which largely attributed to his excellent background of knowledge ineconomics and law.
However, before making the final political decisions, political officials should also take into account the will of people, which I considerconsequential for mainly two reasons. First, almost everyone makes mistakes, soit’s always a good idea to listen to the advice and will of others. If thepolitical officials just rely on their own judgments while being bind to the real need of the mass, they will beeventually disfranchised of privileges. A goodexample is Muammar Gaddafi, the former leader ofLibyawho ruled the country as an autocrat for 41years. Neglecting the demand for democracy and brutally suppressing the opposition, his ruling was atlast overthrown .Secondly, in a democratic society, the officials themselves are elected as thewill of the people, so competent politicalofficials should be consistent with their wordsmade in election. In presidential campaign of America, thecandidate cares for the real needs of the people, makes sincere commitments and blueprints. The one who focuses on theconcerns and will of people wins out, and would fulfill the commitments made tothe public during the election.
Allthe things go well when the judgments of political officials are consistentwith the will of the people, but how when there’re some contradictions? While being cognizantof the people will and carrying them out, the political officials should reconcile their own judgments with public wish, as inthe complicated society there exist different interests, each of which should be treated carefully and properly. Suppose that thegovernment wants to promote the health care reform, the officials can’t simply take any method that helps to the universal medical coverage just because most of themass want to. Rather, they need to considerother stakeholders, such as insurance company and doctors, to make sure the reformis widely accepted based on a common sense. Onthe other hand, people are short-sighted sometimes, and they couldn’t realizethe consequence of a political decision in the far future. For example, peopleusually demand a higher level of country economy and personal material life. Being devoted to efforts in developing these fields, government needs to be aware that the environment should be kept underprotection meanwhile. So here comes another coordinationwhich involves the short concern, noticed by most people, and long one that thegovernment should dig out.
Insum, in current society, the basic quality of a good political official is the loyalty to the public will and the ability to makeindividual judgments. But to be an excellent one, the official should be ableto harmonize each side with another when therecome conflicts.
