Do you agree ordisagree withthe following statement? Although science and technology willcontinue toimprove, the most significant improvement for the quality ofpeople’s lives havealready taken place.

It is commonly accepted that our society had dramatically changed by modernscience and technology, and humans had madeextraordinary progress in knowledge and technology over the recent decades. However, we must be clearly aware that in spite of the great improvementbrought by science and technology, there are still numerous problems left thatwe should spare no effort to overcome in order to improve the quality of ourlives.

To begin with, through out the world, there are millions ofpeople who stillhave a miserable life and have to face the dangers of starvation and exposure. While the people in the developed countries surf on the internet, travelabroad, and enjoya wide array of exquisite food, the majority of the world’spopulation lives in poverty.  According to a recent survey, nearly the entire continent of Africa is impoverished. (个人提议可以写The Africa poverty rate is XXX, which isextremely high compare with the developed countries. 这样感觉好像真实一点,不就是一句话说整个非洲的很贫穷,非洲很大啊)   New science and technology is needed toenhance productivity.

What’s more, I admit the fact that science and technologyhas improved thequality of the health care. With the help of technology wehave been able tosave millions of lives by developing vaccinations, cures, andtreatment for diseases that used to be considered fatal. Nevertheless, whensome diseases are cured, other more serious diseases keep arising. Tomakethings worse, due to the abuse of antibiotics, the new diseases are morefatalsince virus could be stronger and hard to be killed.  Therefore, thereare still a variety of medical difficulties need to be solved.

In addition to the problems of poverty and health, pollutionis another problemwhich plagues all of the industrial nations. Along with the rapidlydevelopmentof science and technology, we are able to produce all kinds of commodities; howeverit also brings about pollution problem which threaten our lives and health. Theozone layer is getting thinner and thinner every year, which meansthat thesun’s radiation is causing more damage to people and the environment.Thestreams and lakes are polluted by industrial waste every day, which means that wemight not drink clean water. In many countries, including our own, thepollutionleaves so many things to be desired. People should develop scienceand technologyto solve those problems.

With that said,个人觉得这个不是很好 althoughscience and technology havefacilitatemakeour livesmore convenient? our lives, the most of improvement forthe quality of people’s liveshave not been accomplished. New technology advancements are needed to fight against thethreemost serious threats to human beings: poverty, health, and pollution. Itis high time to take actions.

Do you agree ordisagree with the following statement? It is often not a good thing to move toa new city or a new country because of the loss of old friends.
Along with the development of globalization, an increasingnumber of people move to another city or country in pursuit of their goals. Whilesome people believe that moving to a new place could be a traumatic experiencebecause it might lead to lose current friends, I argue that it would notdestroy friendship due to modern communication tools; moreover, it couldincrease a person’s understanding of the world and offer new challenges andopportunities.

First of all, people who move to new locations do not needto lose their friends, as they can take advantage of modern communication toolsto keep in touch. People could use numerous means to make contact, such astelephone, email, and online chat software. These technologies easily allow usto maintain friendship. For instance, since I move to the US, I have preservedmy relationships with my old friends by online chatting. We share every happy orsad moment in daily lives and I have never felt that distance could ruin ourfriendship. In addition, as the transportation system has expanded quickly, itis very convenient for me to take trips to visit my old friends.

What’s more, Living in a new place is an eye-openingexperience, which can broaden people’s horizons and deepen people’s sense ofnewness. By travelling internationally, people can gain a better understandingof various customs, histories, cultures, and religions. Learning the diverse viewpointsof a new place not only presents totally new information, it also casts a newlight on old viewpoints.  Throughcomparisons of old and new places, friends, ideas, people become more knowledgeable about the world and themselves.

Last but not least, a new place offers more challenges and opportunities. When people come to a career bottleneck, relocating to a new place might be awise decision.  My uncle, for example, has been an ordinary software engineer in his small town for ten years.Fortunately, when he moved to Beijing, he got a great job and was promoted to amanager.  eople could meet new friendsand extend their social circles to develop their careers when they move to anew place. This interaction with new people could make our lives more fulfilled.

To sum up, people who move to new cities and countriesshould not worry about losing their friends, as technological advancements cansecure their relationship with old friends, and moving can offer them greatbenefits. People should embrace the changes happening in their lives and expectnew challenges from outside world.

The lecture and the reading passage give contradictoryopinions on the topic of hydrogen-based fuel-cell engines.  The passage explains that the fuel-cellengines will replace the internal combustion engines whereas the lectureprovides several counterarguments to this view.

Firstly, reading passage argues that hydrogen can be easily reachable because it can be obtained from numeroussources, such as natural gas and water, but internal-combustion engine dependson petroleum that is non-renewable resource.  On the contrary, the lecturer contends that,in fact, hydrogen is not easily available substance since it must be gained inpure liquid state.  Nevertheless, it istechnological difficult to produce and store pure liquid hydrogen because itneeds an extremely cold environment.

Lecturer also refutes the second point in the readingpassage that fuel-cell engine produce less pollution as its by-product is onlywater. The lecturer asserts that producing pure hydrogen release a great deal ofpollution. According to the lecturer, in the purification process, a largeamount coal and oil are burned in order to gain energy, and therefore it createspollution.

Finally, while the reading passage suggests that the fuel-cellengine is more economical than the internal-combustion engine, the professorargues that it is very expensive to produce the fuel-cell engine because itrequires a rare mental-platinum. In addition, there is not alternative metal toreplace platinum so far.

All of this means that hydrogen-based –fuel-cell engine is notthe solution to replace internal-combustion engine.

The lecturer and the reading passage suggest two competinghypothesis, pollution hypothesis VS predation hypothesis, to explain why the populationof the sea otters is declining.

Firstly, the professor reasons that declining of thepopulation of the sea otters is caused by predators but rather by pollution. Heargues if the sea otters died from pollution, there should be their bodieswashed up on shore. However, it is hard to find dead sea otters on shore. Inother words, they must be eaten by predators so that people could not findtheir bodies.

The professor also refutes the second point in the readingpassage that sea otter decline is caused by pollution because the population ofother small mammals is also declining at the same time.  On the contrary, the professor asserts that whenthe main preys of orcas-whales are hunted by human beings, orcas have to seekto smaller sea animals, such as the seals, sea lions and sea otters. As aresult, the number of other small sea mammals is also decreasing.

In the end, the reading passage argues that the unevenpattern of otter decline can prove that otter decline is caused by pollution.According to professor, the uneven pattern of otter decline is better explainedby predation hypothesis.  When sea otterslive in immense locations where orcas can reach them, the number of them isdeclining; however, when sea otters live in shallow and rocky places whereorcas could not access easily, the number of them is stable.

All of this means that otter decline is caused by predationrather than pollution.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?Communication skill is the most important character of those who are successful.

It is human that everyone is eager for success. When itcomes to what character is the most important for those who are successful inlife, some people choose communication skills. I assert that the most important character that a successful person shouldhave is the ability to think critically.

First of all, communication skills are not crucial for thosewhose jobs do not involve in communicating with others. For example, scientistsspend most of their time on researching cutting-edge technology in labs; artistsimmerse themselves in performing beautiful music; software engineers are occupiedwith the work of coding. All of them are successful, but not necessarily to bea good communicator. The success of a person relies on how much contributionsthey make. Therefore, a successful person might be an incommunicative one.

On the contrary, the ability to think critically is ofutmost importance for a successful person because it can enable one to makedecisions wisely and prudently. Sound decision making is essential to success.Bill gates, for example, is a very famous and successful man. When he was studyingat Harvard University, he noticed the vast opportunities of personal computers.Consequently, he dropped out of school to set up the Microsoft Empire andbrought the whole world into an information age. The ability to thinkcritically made him make correct decisions at right time.

What’s more, thinking critically can help one concentrate onright targets. We all have only and exactly 24 hours a day, but we often havemountains work to do in hands, along with which many personal affairs seemequally urgent. Concentrating on right target is probably the only way toovercome such dilemmas. For instance, my brother always makes a plan every day.He categorizes tasks he is going to fulfill according importance and urgency, and then he put his time and energy on those the most urgent and important tasks.By this good habit, he leads a full fruitful life and become a successfulperson.

To sum up, to be successful in life, one should have theability to think critically. Even though he or she is not a great communicator,he or she can still be successful.

感觉这篇很难写啊~~

The lecturer and the reading passage suggest two competinghypothesis, pollution hypothesis VS文章中不能出现缩写的,这个应该是versus predation hypothesis, to explain why the populationof the sea otters is declining. 这里没有很好地体现阅读和听力相对的部分,应该吧阅读支持哪种观点,听力支持哪种观点写清楚

Firstly, the professor reasons that declining of thepopulation of the sea otters is caused by predators but rather by (instead of)pollution. The lecture and the readingpassage give contradictory opinions on if people are reading less literaturethan they used to. The passage explains that young people are reading lessliterature than before while the lecture provides several counterarguments tothis view.

To begin with, the reading saysthat it is unfortunate for people to read less literature since it canstimulate imagination. On the contrary, the professor contends that other typesof books, such as nonfiction books, are also of high quality and can stimulatereaders’ imagination.

The professor also refutes thesecond point in the reading passage that people turn to read some self-helpbooks or watch other media that are less intellectually stimulated. Theprofessor, however, argues that reading less literature doesn’t mean that the cultureis in decline. In fact, the today’s culture has changed, and other forms ofexpression can correspond to this change.

In the end, while reading passagecomplains that modern literature lack of audience, the professor asserts thatit is not reasonable to blame literature decline for readers. He explains thatpeople are reading less literature because there are less talented authors. Themodern literature is hard to understand.

All of this means that it is notprecise to criticize that young people are reading less literature than ever.

If you need to discuss upsetting or controversial problemswith others, you will use e-mail or text messaging, OR use the telephone orvoice-messaging.

Along with the development of technology, many modern formsof communication like phone calls, emails, and letters are extremely convenient. When I need to talk about a problem that might be upsetting or controversial, Iprefer to use e-mails or text messaging to express myself. I have three reasonsfor this preference.

To begin with, when we write, we can better control the flowof our ideas, explain complex issues patiently, and convey our feelingexplicitly and accurately. For example, my friends Carl and Julie, they are acouple. Every time they have an argument, they always stop the quarrel andwrite an email to each other to explain why they are angry and what they feel. Afterthey write the email and read the response, they become reconciled. Wittingemails or text message can make people understood.

In addition, writing emails or text message can be the bestway to avoid conflict and misunderstanding. When people talk about upsettingand controversial issues, it is quite probable that it leads to an argument withoutproperly control, which makes things worse. Solving problems by exchangingopinions and ideas through written words can prevent conflicts from happening. For instance, one of my neighbors once dropped a note to me saying that mybicycle shouldn’t be parked in front of the driveway. The note was contained ina very lovely envelope, which was so sweet that I could not say no to hisrequest, although it is a shared driveway and I have the right to park my bikethere.

Last but not least, the written words could be evidence thatwe can refer to later. On the contrary, with the oral communication, we couldn’tprove how the things really happened. Last week, I bought a pair of shoes online, but the store sent me the shoes in wrong size. I wrote an email to thecustomer service and explain this issue; however, the customer service specialistrejected to change a new pair of shoes in right size for me. Then, I forwardedthe original emails to her supervisor, and the supervisor finally apologizedfor their fault and changed a new pair of shoes for me.

To sum up, faced with troublesome problems, I prefer to use writtenexpression, such as emails and text message. In this way, I could explain myideas more explicitly, control my emotions, and leave some records to refer to.
