Some concepts to share with you. 1. Does quantitative skills make no use in a company? Of course not. Most graduate programs have quantitative trainings. It is not just because math is the mother of science. Math does help companies solve problems. For example, in marketing, people use statistics to analyze and predict consumer buying behaviors. In finance, math is helpful to forecast the future and option prices. In operation, linear programming is very helpful for resources relocation. In managing, logical thinking makes you more persuasive. Lots of graduated students back to school and tell the first year that how helpful it is that the quantitative skills help them to solve daily problems in their jobs. Even as an executive, to understand the meanings of the figures is also important in your managing. 2. Is it not good to have non-business people as your MBA classmates? I will say no. A class is a community. The more diverse the community is, the more cultures one faces. Besides, many people change their career path through an MBA program. If you are doing marketing and thinking about changing to finance, your can find some advices from your classmates worked in finance. The same in choosing industry, if you want to go into sports or fashion industries, a retired player and a model are your best advisors. You can’t believe how big it is in Sport industry in US. 3. Will I better be an engineer to apply MBA? No. As mentioned, most schools want their community be diverse. No matter what kind the background you have, your performances and your career plans are more important for the school to choose you. 4. How is the GMAT average for Tepper this year? It is heard to be around 692. 5. How is the cost in Tepper? For tuition, it is around USD 75000 for 2 years. For living, it is cheaper than living in New York, Boston, or other major cities in US. One bed room rent costs around 400- 960. 6. How is the living in Pittsburgh? Most of the buildings here are houses rather than apartments. It will be a different experience to live here if you are from a big city. Pittsburgh is not so big as New York or Chicago, and is also not so small. It is on the so-called “the rusty belt” in US. That is to say it is famous for the steel industry in the past. Pittsburgh can not be called as countryside. There are many companies in downtown. The most famous one should be Heniz. There are also a lot of parks and churches in this city. Builders of this city want every citizen here to enjoy the green. Generally speaking, people here are very nice, comparing the experiences I have in other cities. 7. How about the Chinese students in Tepper this year? I heard that there are around 4 people from China this year. 3 form BJ, 1 from KT. 8 people are from Taiwan. 4 other people are from Taiwan but born or worked in US. GMAT scores of these people are around 700. Men tend to have more working experiences and higher scores than women. I think the avg. age is around 28- 32. 8. Is there any other programs in Tepper? Yes. Tepper has part time and flexible time programs. Besides, Tepper has campus in Silicon Valley, California and classrooms in Wall Street, NY. Tepper is preparing its long-distance education, too. There is also a program called “MSCF”. It is also a national famous finance program. If you are interesting in Finance, especially in investment, this program is a good choice for you. 9. Should I pick the school by GMAT score? I will say no, either. Schools in US are different than in China. Every school has its strong and weakness. The score does not tell everything. It is not like to take the college entrance exam in China. The higher score make you go to the famous school but to learn the same courses as what other schools have. To pick a school by its expertise is recommended. The case study method in Harvard is good to train a consultant. The simulation management game in Tepper is good to train a general manager. The working case with companies in Ross is practical to train a problem solver…… You know what you want. You get what you want. If you think 10. Is Tepper a good choice if I don’t know which career to choose? Yes. Tepper has a new program called “Track”. For differentiating from other schools, this program is design for students who know where they want to go. Most MBA will ask students to pick some concentrations. The track program in Tepper is more specific in a job function or industry such as a product manager track, biotech track, and supply-train track. If you have no idea about your future, you can just take general management to understand what is going on in a business. If you are interested in some areas after you entered here and talked to someone, Tepper can provide you deeper training to prepare you into that specific place.
