FAQ for the MS in Finance
We now havetwo MS in Finance (MSF) options:
· Part-time Evening MSF
· Accelerated MSF.
Thepart-time evening MSF is one of our most popular and competitive programstargeted at students with industry experience. This program is geared toward the working professional with most coursestaught by industry leaders who hold a PhD.
The otheroption is the new accelerated MSF program. The accelerated MSF which will beginFall 2012 in Washington, DC only, is equally competitive and extremely popular. The accelerated option was developed by our full-timefaculty to meet the needs of our 300+ MSF applicants with no workingexperience. The accelerated MSF degree is a morequantitative degree geared toward students directly from an undergraduateprogram with strong UG GPA and GMAT score. We will accept approximately 80students for Fall 2012.
1. The acceleratedMSF is held during the day in Washington D.C. Who will be teaching these daytime courses?
The majorityof the Accelerated MSF courses will be held during the day at our Washington,DC location. These courses during the day will be taught by ourfull-time faculty. Elective courses along with Business Communication andLeadership Ethics will take place in the evening. These courses areprimarily delivered by our Senior Professional Instructors and PractionerFaculty. 2. Can we choose elective courses in theevenings or weekends in Baltimore?
Elective courses will be offered in theevenings and weekends. You will be able to choose electives that meet yourcareer goals in our DC or Baltimore locations.
3. Canwe switch from the Accelerated MSF to the part-time MSF?
No. If you accept admission to the Accelerated MSF program, you mustcomplete the degree in one year in accordance with the programplan. You will have some flexibility in choosing your electivecoursework.
4. How many students will be admitted to the acceleratedMSF for Fall 2012?
We will admit two groups of 40 students.
5.What is the projected class profile?
Approximately80% international and approximately 70% from Asia. However, electivecourses along with Leadership Ethics and Business Communication (6 totalcourses) will have a 40-50% international class profile as these classes areoffered in the evenings and on weekends with our part-time evening MSF students.
6. Is the Accelerated MSF considered a full-timeprogram?
The accelerated option for the MSF is apart-time program offered in an accelerated format. Your diplomawill state MS in Finance. There is no reference to part-time or full-timestudies. Basically, you are taking a full course load, which will meetyour visa requirements, in a part-time format.
7. What are thedifferences between the accelerated MSF and the evening MSF?
Theaccelerated MSF is targeted toward students with no professional workexperience, coming directly from an undergraduate or graduate program. The average GMAT score for the AcceleratedMSF is 700. Slightly more than half thecourses are offered during the day and primarily taught by our full-timefaculty.
Thepart-time evening MSF program is geared toward the working professional withmost courses taught by industry leaders who hold a PhD. The GMAT is required if you do not have a 3.2 UG GPA in a businessdiscipline. The evening programrequires progressive industry experience.
8. Can I take day time classes in Baltimore?
The day time classes are offered inWashington DC only and are only open to the accelerated MSF students.
9. I received a “conditional” offer. What does that mean?
A “conditional” offer of admissionis dependent upon the receipt of official transcripts, course by courseevaluation, or the completion of ESL courses. The details of the condition are contained in the admissions letter thatis mailed to you. 10. Can I work or get an internship while I am inthe Accelerated MSF program?
Students inF-1 status are allowed to work only under certain conditions, and only withauthorization BEFORE the beginning of the employment. Students must have beenfull-time for at least one academic year (two semesters). Additionally, Careypolicy is that students will not be approved for internships until they havespent at least one semester at Carey.
Generallythe work authorization that is used for F-1 students is Curricular PracticalTraining, or CPT. This can be approvedfor part-time work during the semester. Full-time CPT will only be approvedduring the summer or winter breaks. Unpaid internships can be authorizedthrough CPT under certain circumstances – contact International Servicesfor details.

11. I received an internship offer, can I take time off from school and todo this internship then resume mystudies?
Yes - if you are in the part-timeevening program since you have up to 6 years to complete thisoption.
Please note – this does NOT apply to students in F-1 status,who are NOT allowed to take time offfrom school unless they leave the US.
However, if you are in the one yearaccelerated program which follows a fixed format, the answer is no. F-1 students would be eligible for OPT aftercompleting the accelerated program.
12. What is the tuition for the Accelerated MSF?
The currenttuition is $1060 per credit. Tuitiongenerally increases 3-5% annually. Tuition is paid when you register forclass. You only pay for the courses inwhich you are registered.
13. What is the cost for an F1 student?
As an F-1 student, you need toshow proof that you can afford all tuition and living expenses for one academicyear to receive an I-20. The current amounts are: $42,699 for graduate business programs.
14. I am new to the US/Washington DC area. How do I find housing?
We do not provide on-campushousing for any of our students. You may find it helpful to visit the Off Campus HousingOffice of JohnsHopkins University to locate housing near the Homewood Campus in northern BaltimoreCity. Also visit the Housing sectionfor other communities in Maryland, Washington, DC andNorthern Virginia. (new housing information for the DC area should be comingsoon).
15. What are the requirements forthe ESL classes?
We currently require a 100 TOEFL score with a score of atleast 25 in each category. If you score less than 25 in speaking orwriting, you will be required to take Professional Speaking and Pronunciationfor Non-Native Speakers of English and/or Professional Writing for Non-NativeSpeakers of English. We require a 7.0 IELTS score, if you score less than7.0 in speaking or writing, you will have to take the above referencedcourses.
16. Do degrees earned outside of the U.S. need tobe evaluated?
The Johns Hopkins Carey Business Schoolrequires that all degrees earned outside of the United States be evaluatedcourse by course to determine the equivalency of a U.S. earned degree. For theinitial admission review process we will accept official sealed transcripts inEnglish in lieu of the evaluation. However, if admitted it will be“conditionally” and a course by course evaluation will be required in order to satisfythe admission condition. Please Note: If a degree is still being pursued and a course by course evaluation issubmitted that does not reflect the equivalency of a U.S. earned degree, the credentialevaluation agency should be contacted once the degree is conferred and anupdated evaluation stating that that the degree meets the equivalency of a U.S.earned degree must be submitted. The agency will charge an additional butreasonable fee for this process.
