Claim: We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share thanfrom those whose views contradict our own.
Reason: Disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with
the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
The claim states that it is the people that whose views we share rather than those whose views contradict our own we can usually learn much from on the reason that disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. Surely, sometimes, we are trapped into a situation that we debate with some people not for the knowledge itself but for the success of beating others down. However, we also may study much from people whose views are different from us.
Admittedly, considering the reason that disagree can cause stress and inhibit learning, in some situation, we do not discuss and debate for the aim of improving our scope of knowledge because we try to be persuasive when we confront some people share different opinions. When we discuss and share the same opinions with the people, it may arouse a sense of finding a friend and we may learn some new ideas from these people. Therefore, we could not learn much under this condition, and sometimes, if severe, these disagreements may cause bad relationship.
However, we could also learn much from people have views, contrasting with ours. If the people and us can calm down and take the process of share disagreement as an opportunity to shape the ideas and views of themselves, it is possible to complete their views and learn much. For example, Deng Xiaoping, one of presidents of china, said that (and I paraphrase), no matter what the views are, if they are seem different from the orthodox views, we should consider their feasibility.
What's more, considering the process we share the different views, we may find other good evidence to support our view. Some scientific theories come from severe debate between the distinctly different groups, and just because the discussion of views of each other, human knowledge advances, whether at the personal, community, or global level.
To sum up, we may safely say that though disagreement can cause some stress in sharing our views and inhibit learning sometimes, it is possible that they also provide us critical thinking and may make us learn much from the people disagree with us. |
