02-08-12 select的用法

The answer is C.  I'm not sure how to use "select".  Can it be used as the following way?

select sb sth(position)?

How about the synonym "choose"? same?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry. Now the question is:

12. The Texas Legislature selected Vassar Miller _____ in 1982, and again in 1988.

(A) was the state’s poet laureate

(B) as the state’s poet laureate

(C) the state’s poet laureate

(D) become the state’s poet laureate

I chose B.  but the answer is C. I'm quite confused.

B sounds much better than C, I think C should be:

The Texas Legislature selected Vassar Miller, the state's poet laureate, in 1982, and again in 1988.

I'm not sure, that's only how I think about it!!!!

the explanation for the answer is that "select" can be followed two objective, just as make sb/sth  sth.  I looked up the dictionary, but can not find such use.  That's why I brought up to discuss.  Again, is it applicable to "choose"?
