I think "their" in choice A can only refer to the subject of the previous sentence, i.e. woman scientists; So "their female counterpart" would be equivalent to "woman scientists' female counterpart", which does NOT make any sense whatsoever!
Let me try to elaborate my point with this example:
Like men, women are smart, but unlike men, they are less physical.
What do you think about "they" in this example?
A). clearly refers to "men".
B). clearly refers to "women".
C). is ambiguous
