这题选C；原句是否可以改写成Virtually the same array of mammals (which was) occupied this area in the late Pleistocene era lives in the hills surrounding Los Angeles today . 那么这样的句式就要选B了。
而原题不选B，因为occupied放在句子后端，要是做从句讲，也是离所修饰的the same array of mammals太远，修饰in the hills surrounding Los Angeles today了，这样不符题意，不能选～

首先，如果象你那么改，句子的重心已经变化，一个是强调lives，一个则强调occupied。两个句子完全不同了。

其次，你说的这个原因也可以那么理解，是更不符合语法结构。出现的是两个谓语，必然有主从。

I think that if the sentence is used as Likui said, it is sure to use "occupying", not to "which was"....coz the object of "occupy" is "this area", not "the array of ammal".....
