Issue: Start: 9:43 (501 words) The best way to teach is not to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones. A good teacher should be able to give constructive feedback to his or her students no matter it is positive or negative. Students need to be praised for their positive actions as a guideline of what to behave in the future. They also need to be criticized or even negative for negative actions to know what to improve. Solely praising students' positive actions and ignoring the negative ones create an illusion for them that everything they do is correct. The reason is students will have no base-line or behavioral standards to compare to. Consequently, they usually fail to make sound judgment on their own facing with important life-time decisions due to the false information they are given. By criticizing negative actions among students, teachers are setting up a mirror not the students who made the negative actions, and those who witness the incidents. In the future, when their students find themselves in similar situations, they will carefully check on themselves before making a move. In this way, teachers help the students to develop a more mature decision making system that will benefit them in the long-run. Some teachers raise doubts on the efficiency of this mechanism, and argue that criticizing negative actions of students will hurt their feelings and therefore are not helpful to their psychological development. Their argument is invalid because delivering the negative comments does not necessarily need to be hurtful for their listeners. Teachers should employ verbal techniques while wording their critiques and make sure the students understand the comments is about one or a few incidents instead of about individuals. Schools should also make a list of words that imply extreme meanings or aggressiveness and strictly ask their teachers to not use such words in teaching. If the critiques of student's negative actions are correctly worded and delivered, such mechanism can only be beneficial for their development. First, it builds them a stronger mind. Teachers' responsibility is to prepare students for the society, for the track to their dreams. But on the way, students have to interact with so many different people on their own, and a lot of these people will arbitrary comment about their works based on their own personal interests or intentions. Some of such comments will for sure be rough to hear. And if students were never prepared at school for the corresponding social skill, they will be easily defeated before the true competition even starts. Secondly, by listening to their teachers, the students can learn how to politely deliver a negative piece of information to other people in the future. For instance, as a supervisor, it is necessarily for him or her to point out flaws in the works of the employees. Being able to do this will save enormous amount of time and energy in the professional world. For teachers, praising the positive actions is definitely necessary. But the negative actions deserve just as much attention. End: 10:13 |
