比较让我疑惑的是，为什么不用the one,,而用one....为什么省掉了that..OG的解释我一点也不明白。

one本身就是特指，所以不用再加定冠词the，类似请参阅OG134C的解释；

one是代词，that在句中也起类似代词的作用，所以that可以省略而不影响句子结构。

One of a type, it sounds ok to me but don't know the official rule about one of a type, one of a kind, or ... we can't say one of a chair, right?

For this particular question, can we say "..... explosion, one type previously unknown to science?"

这个句子中的type的范畴比较广，举个例子，我们可以将武器设备看成一个type，而战斗机仅仅是这个type中的一个组成部分；再比如我们可以把化妆品看成一个type，而香水仅仅是one of this type。
