22. We all work or will work in our jobs with many different kinds of people. In your opinion, what are some important characteristics of a co-worker (someone you work closely with)? Use reasons and specific examples to explain why these characteristics are important.

A good co-worker can be a best teacher in one's life. Even though people prefer to stay with different types of people, there are still some essential characteristics of a co-workers that are appreciated by all. In my view, the most suitable people I choose to work with are kind-hearted, intelligent and sensible.

To begin with, a kind-hearted person is the most precious personality. Such a person is helpful. For example when there are some emergency of one's family and this person must rush back, leaving only his co-worker. A helpful colleague usually takes care of the business in addition to his own. He will assist to finish some of the urgent assignments that are required for his co-worker. When a person is sick at his position, his considerate co-worker will visit him in hospital and extend the best wishes. All these activities can build a strong tie between the person and his co-worker, leading to an improved working environment.

Next, a wise, intelligent person with necessary knowledge and skill will be pleasant to work with. In the professional area, knowledge and experience ensure successful arrangement of assignments. It is tough to work with a person who are not competent or without skills. Furthermore, because the world is becoming more interrelated, many jobs are evolving to be increasingly demanding. It is hard to accomplish and share the projects with less able co-worker. An intelligent co-worker is a spur, encouraging his team-members to work hard.

In addition, sensibility means that the co-worker is not annoying his colleagues with trivial or private issues. Everyone would rather guard some personal privacy and secrecy, and most of the times, does not want other people even to mention some sensitive topics such as family or kids. A wise and sensible person is able to feel which direction of talking is correct, avoiding the difficult ones and bringing the pleasant topics.  

As discussed above, a nice, clever and considerate person is the best to work with. Even though there may be some other personality traits that are satisfying, such as fair and optimistic, the three points proved here are obviously of primary importance. This kind of people is always welcome in every organization or company.

To me as well as to every resident in Shanghai, Yulan Magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai, is the most important plant not only for its economical value but also for the spiritual and cultural value it embodies.

Firstly, Yulan Magnolia is the most valuable among all magnolia families. Its blossoms are the most fragrant and its petals and leaves contain more medicinal plant oil than any other magnolias, which is the essential raw material and additive for bath soup, perfume, balm and shampoo. In addition, constant drinking of the flower teas made of Yulan Magnolia petals can both improve one’s health and make one’s facial skin glossy. In addition to all these virtues, it can be cultivated in most soil types. Except for extreme drought, it does not require supplemental watering.

Secondly, Yulan Magnolia is a major ornamental plant in Shanghai, China. It is common scenery along the streets and in the parks. In the cold early spring, when the cold and chilly wind still blows and other leaves and blossoms of other plants have not come up yet, it has covered itself with huge creamy white flowers before the buds emerge. All spectacular blossoms are fragrant and hold upright on the stems. It is really a great comfort to see such beautiful flowers in chilly early spring. It is for this reason that Yulan Magnolia is elected as the city flower of Shanghai. Many prizes are named after it, such as, “Yulan Magnolia Construction Prize” and “Yulan Magnolia Prize for Excellent Teachers”. And “Yulan Magnolia Commemoration Prize” is the highest honor for the foreign professionals, scholars and entrepreneurs who have made their great contributions to the prosperity of Shanghai.

To sum up, Yulan Magnolia is important not only because it is a staple economic and ornamental plants in Shanghai but also because it represents the aspiration for the best and the spirit of fearlessness for hardship.
