as……as结构，disturbing前的as不能省。多读，习惯就好。

或者：

disturbing和compelling很难找到对等的词来翻译，但确实用得非常美，作文可借鉴。

但是第一个as后面是一个形容词，第二个as后面却是一个句子，这样岂不是违反了平行原则？

2 未划线部分的themselves和划线部分的they指代对象不一致，这样也可行么？

为什么不能选E，as disturbing in his own times as (have been) compelling for ours.
我觉得as 后面跟动名词的形式很对等啊~~

同3,4楼~~E选项里的as ……as不是很对称么，A就不平行了。为什么啊~

这个问题也困扰我很久了，而且疑问点和楼主一致，我觉得E选项抛开时态不谈，只看as^as结构的话，为什么是B好呢？为什么两个as后面接的不一样也可以呢？

根据曼哈顿语法帖子一个解释：They were as disturbing (then) as they are compelling (now).

They were as X as they are Y.

Notice the important addition of the word "they" in the second element to make a proper comparison between elements in different time periods. Take a look at these two examples:

They are as red as apples. (comparing one thing to another)
vs
They were as red then as they are now. (comparing two ideas in two different tenses)

所以这个结构，比较的主语不省略。

E选项结构是对的，只是时态不对。
B选项they are补出是因为前后形式不一致不可以省略啊
E和B结构是一样的，剩下的要从语义出发。
抛开语义谈语法一点意义没有好么。
